Re: Vinyl Spins

...just flew in from Miami Beach BOAC...

Actually more like from Balt'more.

If were the kind to post this in a thread about monthly acquisitions, I'd hereby boast about discovering some pretty good record stores in Baltimore. Also about finding a new job in the District of Columbia, thus firming up a future in Charm City with my lovely wife whose internship this summer evolved and so on... . The timing has been incredible. A few days before my flight out to visit my sweet thing, I get a call for an interview. I packed my trusty Ben Silver 3/2 roll blazer with silver buttons (and when I say packed, I mean packed down folded up inside out into an overhead flight bag with the rest of my gear--I unfolded it in our hotel and there was nary a wrinkle--incredible!), my O'Connell's khakis, a BB buttondown off-white shirt, a solid repp tie... and I nailed it. Within days of the interview, while still in B'more, I got an offer.

I didn't buy nothing while in Balt'more except baseball tickets, tickets to a jazz concert, and a lot of seafood dining out. I guess that is buying something. My little short stop paid for our hotel stay, bless her heart.

Re: Vinyl Spins

today's digging turned up all for the nice price King Floyd on Chimneyville, Latimore on Glades, and the Moby Grape LP with proper inner sleeve, all original pressings, all nice condition,
no reissues ..........

no reissues ... no 180 gram .... nothing cute ..... that's not digging ........

earlier in the thread the question was raised about the reissue vinyl of today ..... hard to make a blanket statement, and it's good that records still exist and that people are buying them .....

but accept no substitutes for the real thing if possible

Re: Vinyl Spins

Agree, in general, stanshall. I hold out for first or early pressings myself. Some things are nearly impossible to find in good shape, however, and so I don't mind a good repressing if the maker has been thoughtful about reproducing the cover art and packaging and the slab sounds good. Case in point: Blue Note records. Not impossible to find original pressings, just impossibly expensive, and in general, the quality of the reissues is pretty good.

Another case: I'm waiting on an order at the record shop for the recent mono repressing of the UK version of Revolver.

Re: Vinyl Spins

/\  agree Chipper, sometimes the reissue is the only realistic way to go but ..... try for the really real if you can, obviously .....

same for books unless there's a compelling reason to get a later edition .........

I still play my childhood version of Revolver, US version, Capitol swirl ... pretty beat up but ah the memories .....

Re: Vinyl Spins

I figure there's endless opportunity to upgrade the collection. There's a lot I'm perfectly satisfied with, especially if it's an early or first pressing. There's a lot of stuff that is a placeholder of sorts until I can find the "perfect" copy. For example, this morning I found a "slightly worn" copy of ON THE CORNER to replace my "very beat up" copy.
