I saw sandals in the 'Hip Store' on Tuesday morning and quickly averted my gaze. They were not, however, the worse thing on offer. I seem to remember a photograph, as if out of a nightmare, of a 'modernist' sporting sandals with socks. Please tell me I'm mistaken. Isn't Connery seen in sandals in 'Thunderball'? Some men can get away with anything. I cannot and would not.

Not for me. I think I was traumatised as a child wearing those plastic ones during summer holidays. When I got to wearing the converse type copies of tennis shoes as a 10/11 year old I felt a lot more comfortable.

My father (who was one of those arty types) wore sandals all year round with socks being the only concession to winter. If he had to wear dress shoes for some formal occasion he looked really glum until he could take them off.
Back to the topic; I have experimented with ‘fishermans’ sandals, the ones that are more like a shoe as they have a closed toe and heel. I feel they’re a bit naff really, okay for home and garden.

I'd argue (perhaps implausibly) that, looking at that shot of Mulligan blowing away, a certain style might be considered 'West Coast' (but only sockless): jazz, surf, chicks, iced drinks, Shorty Rogers dropping in to jam. But you'd have to see that photograph to get the point. As for Chet, I'm not so sure about his (what look like) sliders.
