Re: The Right Sweatshirt. By Matt.

Wow rereading this thread reminded me of the first time I came across TI. Miss a lot of those old posters.

I notice that LL Bean now do a global shipping program where all duties/taxes are calculated at the checkout, so one of their Crew Neck Atheletic sweats is around the £39 mark, pretty reasonable IMO.

+ free shipping if your order comes to over £75 - nice.

Here in the US it's always free shipping on every order, which is a great perk. LL Bean is not what it once was but I can't bring myself to let it go, despite certain Bean family members' attitudes and the general decline in quality and their unnecessary tinkering with the classics. Thank God the Bean boot is still relatively the same, made by hand in my hometown.

Some of the LVC sweats are well made and worth checking out, as are Pike Bros. If you have a good budget Gymphlex do a decent one too but the cheaper ones have a chest logo, sometimes these come up at TK Maxx

/\  agree Tom about the LVC sweatshirt I had, it was well-made and the color was beautiful, definitely recommended for the slim set, on me it ran a little on the small side but unless a dude needs a ton of room the LVC sweat is a nice option ......

The LVC are lovely but pricey (and rarely turn up at a discount sad ) ,
Uniqlo do a decent sweatshirt for not much cash.

I have found the Uniqlo sweats to be quite flimsy and stretch out a lot. Still not bad for the money though.

Re: The Right Sweatshirt. By Matt.

Thanks for the suggestions: Sunspel, Gymphlex and Pike Bros unfortunately do not offer both raglan sleeves and v-detail. The LVC looks like its very well made, although it seems more of a boatneck rather than a crewneck. Uniqlo's sweatshirt ticks all the boxes but looks a little cheap from the product photos on their website.

If you're feeling flush, The Real McCoy do a sweat with all the details you seek. Can't speak for its fit, but the quality of their goods is normally top drawer, as it would want to be for that money - 180 euro or equivalent.   The Uniqlo sweatshirt obviously isn't as high quality - as Treble Clef says, they're a tad stretchy - but I find it's a good option for knocking about in, particularly at that price.

Re: The Right Sweatshirt. By Matt.

I stretched my budget a small bit last year and acquired a couple of Hinoya sweats direct from Japan. Raglan sleeves, V-neck detail and woven on vintage looms. The burgundy in particular is a favourite of mine - after a mere handful of washes it has faded beautifully. Including shipping, it worked out at about £70 a sweat which I don't think is too bad. Two Moon are another of the same ilk. along with the afore-mentioned McCoys. If you are willing to grub through Yahoo auctions Japan and Rakutan, there are loads of bargains to be had.

https://www.kafka.co.uk/browse/b-NationalAthleticGoods-592/ What about these, although waistband looks a little small? I have a Velva Sheen that has lasted very well, but has a very wide neck. Had a Champion- Todd Snyder, but these come up big and also have logos on them. What about Buzz Rickson?

Re: The Right Sweatshirt. By Matt.

Now then.  A bump.
I bought a grey sweatshirt from 'American Classics' back in 2011.  They told me it was made in Germany.  It wasn't.  It was actually made in Turkey.  About £70 or £80.  I think I wore it twice, partly because I never have been able to get along with a crew or round neck.
Bean I haven't looked into, but last week I bought, for just over £10, one of those hefty, navy, small tag on the left hand bottom, made in the USA Russell Athletic jobs.  And I'm as pleased as punch with it.  It has a v-neck so took a bit of searching for.
I'll probably never find another like it.  Poly/cotton, though.

A couple of the L.L.Bean sweatshirts on Ebay look okay.  Inexpensive, too.

I like the discontinued Dickies sweatshirts. In fact I’m wearing one now.Very comfortable and cheap.
I can put up with the lack of a V stitch and the poly cotton blend as I only wear them at home
I believe John Simons used to sell them

Re: The Right Sweatshirt. By Matt.

Cotton, Robbie, or poly/cotton?  Just I'd made my mind up to go back into their Nottingham store and be called 'dude' by the sales assistant again, AUS posted that the place has closed its doors.  Indeed it did.  I passed by a few weeks ago and it was being rapidly transformed into something else.
