The B-52's are playing at our country club tomorrow night. Can't wait. Cosmic Thing brings back a lot of great memories for me.

It was a lot of fun. We sold 2000 tix - to members and their guests only, with a max of 4 tix per member - and it sold out in about 4 days. They played on a stage that was set up on the golf course, facing back toward the clubhouse. Fred and the girls sounded great and put on an awesome show. Really fantastic evening. By the way, their rider was about 8 pages long and pretty hilarious.

This was the seventh year we've thrown this party, and it's gotten bigger and better every year. It's been The Connells, Cracker, Smithereens, Drivin n Cryin, Bodeans, Blues Traveler, and B-52's. Not sure how we're going to top this year.

Here's the advantage of a Technics SL1200 table. This recording, at least as mastered and pressed in this copy, is about 2.5 times too fast, i.e., the guy who recorded the bootleg was probably using a cheap cassette recorder or one with tired batteries and so the tape ran slow during recording--when transferred to a master reel at normal speed, of course, it's going to speed up the recording. Or, the record people were just cheap and wanted to squeeze a lot of music on just on LP and so sped up the whole thing in the mastering studio. In either case, one can tell immediately that things aren't right,  as Jimi's voice sounds like he's a cartoon character on amphetamines and, while his guitar playing is always amazing, the guitar here is impossibly fast--nobody's fingers were that good! Take this down about 2.5 notches on the pitch slider and it sounds perfect. It's also almost twice the running speed--it feels like this is two LPs worth of music.

Back cover.

This was the cover the original LP came with back when it was pressed and released back then (circa 1970?). My pressing, of course, is from just a few years ago.

Re: Vinyl Spins

CD copy but that's okay. I once wrote a short review for a music site that goes like this:

"Imagine the score for a Tom and Jerry cartoon by Tim Burton where all the characters are on speed and bad acid, Pacino lurking in the noir alleyways with his eyes peeled.

This has everything I love: cool jazz; frenetic free jazz; dissonant rock; noise; television and movie themes; crazy cover art (the Weegee "Corpse" photograph, the hellraiser snakes-through-eyesockets nightmare illustrations!!). Phoebe comes through the doorway in her black leather jacket and string of pearls. There is so much in the world to love."

https://e.snmc.io/lk/o/l/c48634851f4567485daa184d7010dcaf/1722391.jpg

In my reviews, sometimes I like to throw in an obscure line that only I would really get but that is in keeping with the tone. Here, the Phoebe line. The day I bought this CD, the girl I had a crush on came into the store wearing a leather jacket and pearls -- she was giddy with her girlfriends because they were out celebrating her wedding the next day. Oh, bummer.

Re: Vinyl Spins

I bought a rarity today: a 1970 first pressing of Neil Young's After the Gold Rush with insert... and... get this... a misprinted inside gatefold photo that depicts not Neil Young but rather Tommy Bolan from the inside gatefold photo of Electric Warrior. Weird. Set me back less than 20 bucks, and it's in nearly perfect condition. I did some online research, and it is indeed pretty rare, and fetches anywhere from 100 to 300 bucks on the market. I don't think the record store owner realized what he had. When I opened up the record and saw what I'd found, I kind of gulped, did a quick take at the record store owner, who wasn't paying any attention anyway. Then made a beeline for the register. Score!

Weird stuff. I'm hanging on to my copy, though.

Yeah... ha ha... The Who did Tommy, right? If you remember the early 70s, you weren't there.

Love this video. This post qualifies for this thread because (1) it's my thread, (2) I own L.A. Woman on LP in two copies, and (3) I bought the single when I was a kid (although I no longer have it). In any case, enjoy riding with Jim.

People often ask me what's my favorite band of all time. The answer is easy: Tame Impala.

My second favorite? These guys.

A smooth and remarkable step forward from Slave Ambient and every bit as intoxicating as Dylan's step into Blonde on Blonde.
