Another fantastic slew of images mate. Thanks again. Loving the seersucker jackets particularly as well as the collars on some of the shirt ads. Top class.

Re: BB's Boom Years bunny mag scans

I've found incredible stuff in those Esquire ads... they were the inspiration for this project for sure... Just went back through the Boom Years thread right before doing this, found a great spread from Esquire, the tropical/winter spread with ski boots and espadrilles, loved that...

Glad you're enjoying this AC, high praise... Much more on the way, going through '63 now... Having every issue from '59-'69 really allows for a depth of what I can post here that gives new light to some of these ads/clothes even if the actual rolled collars or Cricketeer sport coats are nothing new in themselves...

I think one of the attractions even beyond the clothing and general style of the models is the advertising itself. I love old ads for baked beans, cars, cigarettes, travel whatever from this period really. I appreciate you sharing fella. Thanks.

Re: BB's Boom Years bunny mag scans

Interesting what a high percentage of these ads for menswear feature (usually admiring) sexy women, but then they were culled from Playboy, which may skew matters. I know good looking women still figure in many menswear ads, but I don't think they are usually so overtly admiring, sadly.

Re: BB's Boom Years bunny mag scans

One of the most interesting things about this is seeing the evolution of advertising... I'm going backwards which in my opinion makes it more obvious when things change... 1962 was the last year of primarily illustration-based ads, and 1963 was the first year of primarily photo-based ads...

Also keep in mind captainpreppy that not all of these photos are ads... some are from the style features put together by the magazine itself... Advertisers definitely made ads sexier for PB, there's no doubt about it, but the most overt are probably from a feature spread...

Finishing '63 and moving into '62:

Wow.  Great thread BB.  I have always really enjoyed the Playboy ads.  I love to pass a few minutes with a record, a drink, and a thumb through one of the old Pbs.  A great way to remove yourself from the here and now.  Thanks for taking the time.  Can't wait for the earlier stuff.

More out of the park class ads mate. Thanks so much for your efforts. Love the Bob peak art on the Puritan one and that Playboy Patio set up is beautiful. The Spitfire one brings back bad memories for my other half as it was one of those she hit in her first accident after passing her driving test as a teenager in the early '80s. Whenever we see one now or on TV or an old ad and she winces!!

The precipitous decline of pipe smoking in the 30 years between 1960 and 1990--far greater than the decline of cigarette smoking--has long puzzled me, given that it is a far less unhealthy way to enjoy tobacco than cigarettes. When I was a young man, you could go into any large drug store and find an extensive array of quality pipes and pipe tobaccos. I believe that there are now only about 1.5 million pipe smokers out of a nation of 310 or so million people today. In the early '90s, I used to enjoy sauntering through the Los Angeles Zoo enjoying a pipe. (Smoking has subsequently been banned there.) My pipe seemed to elicit more interest from the kids than the animals did!

I'm also puzzled by it... I'm not a smoker of any kind myself but my grandfather smoked a pipe for many years and I remember the smell of pipe smoke whenever I visited him. It always struck me as a much more pleasant smell than cigarettes and certainly more than cigars...
