My son wants the James Dean scarlet colour Harrington. He is 19 soon. So whose do I get? Ruling out Barracuta and Grenfell on price for a 19 year old. Not many in scarlet red about that look any good. Orvis, JTG? Does JS do one at present? Which USA brands? Ruled out Ben Sherman, Merc, Relco etc. Advice received gratefully.

These are quite billowy but are mid-point between market-stall ones and Barracuta

Seeing as how he is 19 he might prefer the fit on the Jump the Gun, sized down

(Just for the record) regardless of the price, the Barracutas went to shit a few years ago anyway.
The Combat above might be ok. The price is certainly right. When I was a young lad red Harringtons were associated with skins whose main hobby was looking for a fight, so the name is apt. Anyway it might be passable. Personally I wouldn't pay 50 for the JTG.
Vintage US-licensed Barracutas, I think branded as Van Heusen, come up cheaply, although trying to find a specific colour and size is of course another story. They're not all cotton like the Barracuta own brand but I think they have the look perfectly. Not an option in these circumstances I imagine but probably the best option for someone on a budget seeking a Harrington in a more common colour.
I don't know how good the Orvis are but 150GBP for 60% nylon shell is excessive to my mind:

However they do look good and I vaguely recall hearing good reports here and/or on Ask Andy. Personally I would save a ton and try the Combat first (unless something better comes along).

For a £19 year old lad, I'd say JTG.
I have one and it's fine for knocking about.
Thanks all. The red Harrington no longer has the Skinhead association to this generation. He is slowly and unwittingly on a path to Ivy Style....
If you want a G4 style this GANT looks ok

Same with the Lacoste too which has the red colour but is a very light summer jacket.

The logo ruins it for me on the Gant.
Got to agree cannot deal with Logos on jackets.
However, as this is for a young one the oposite probably applies.
My son is anti logo on anything. Of course Gant, Lacoste etc are brands he is only now becoming aware of.
Ah, sorry, posted from my phone and didn't see the logo, agree, would make it a no goer for me too.
Wasn't Dean's jacket actually the famous McGregor "Anti-Freeze" jacket? There's a myth, too, that he dipped the jacket in paint or dye to get that color.
At the same time, I read an account that the jacket was a department store brand Dean picked off the rack.
