Re: The Rake on harringtons

The good old Harrington jacket, nothing new in this piece for most of us I guess, but an enjoyable read all the same. The only thing thing I would question is the statement 'Traditionally, its shell is a water-repellent poly-cotton blend'.....up to a few years ago Baracuta jackets were 100% cotton, treated to be showerprooof. They were  a much nicer garment all round than what they are turning out today.

Re: The Rake on harringtons

It's a bit of a shit article in my opinion - nothing new, quite a few errors (the most obvious being the reference to J Dean wearing one, together with a photo showing that his jacket blatantly wasn't a G9) and some important information omitted e.g. the fact that Baracuta's G9 of today is too far removed from the original article to be worthy of the name any more (a change that only occurred a few years ago when the company was taken over).

A missed opportunity.

Yes pretty shallow - but then The Rake is just Singapore based aspirational luxury promotion it seems.

Re: The Rake on harringtons

I did eventually pick up a Harrington late for my son's birthday this week.  I was near Carnaby Street so on a whim popped in The Face I was last at over thirty years ago as a kid and got the red there.  The owner (same guy) said they are made in London still and the quality is surprisingly great for my 19 year old lad. Cotton not a mix, right details, good soft fabric inside tartan, no logo, chunky zip.  He is made up with it and I am relieved just to have it sorted.

My lad also was bewildered by my telling him wearing a red Harrington as a young Mod in early 80s as they 'belonged to Skinheads risked a kicking genuinely from both sides for appropriating it outside the right scene.  I recall it broadly being blue or stone for Mods, red and oxblood for Skins, olive for scooter boys and all, black for Rude Boys and Indie goth types.  Stupid but there we go.  These curated subculture archives on display do not capture the danger and intimacy of it all as kids.

Hi.  Yes The Face is Sherry's it seems.  It was a last minute buy so I was relieved.  I had been buying very discounted grain Weejuns round the corner at G.H.Bass when I realised I needed to sort it.  He does not know brands anyway so look and colour mattered more.  He hates logos on clothes so that helped too.

Re: The Rake on harringtons

O'Connell's may well have old stock of proper Baracutas i.e. from before they were taken over. Not cheap as I recall. I believe back in the day there were lots of G9 exact copies, licensed from Baracuta but with a cotton-manmade mix and made in the US and Canada, which can still be found cheaply on Ebay. In fact a friend of mine had one he wanted to sell a while ago (I can ask if it's still available). Those are very probably what we see in all/most of those vintage films and TV series.

Re: The Rake on harringtons

JS have them here: http://www.johnsimons.co.uk/jackets/
Be sure not to order the identical looking Golf jacket which I think has (or did have) a huge pocket on back at the right to get balls from.
This is not always evident from the pics.
Thanks
Mark

Re: The Rake on harringtons

Yes important to get 'true' sizing to avoid the modern trend for everything to be cut pencil thin.  (My younger son now wears 'muscle fit' which seems to be deliberately too small).

Here's the recent thread that I started the discussion on harrington options:

Re: The Rake on harringtons

I haven't seen the Grenfell G9 but If their G4 equivalent is anything to go by it will be excellent.

https://grenfell.com/collections/all/products/harrington-peach-cotton-in-beige

Certainly what I would be looking at if I wanted another one.

Re: The Rake on harringtons

For me in pictures at least, the tartan doesn't grab me in the Grenfell but the jacket itself looks ace.

Re: The Rake on harringtons

I prefer the house check linings in those Grenfells in a way, not as classic as the Stewart tartan but more subdued. The jacket looks a bit more grown up as a result. I would probably just like a plain lining if truth be told as there is less issue with clashing with the other items you are wearing.

Overall I prefer a G9 style these days, the lapels lie flat whereas on the G4 they roll back to expose the lining unless the jacket is zipped right up.

Re: The Rake on harringtons

How's Fred Perry, subculture connections aside? I'm probably looking for a jacket around the equivalent £150. Any suggestions, JS aside? They seem quite interesting, wondering if they ship to Singapore.

Re: The Rake on harringtons

Sorry should of been FP (spell checker corrected it).

They are at:

Fred Perry
Ion Orchard
2 Orchard Turn, #B3-01 ION Orchard · +65 6509 8157

and

8 Grange Rd, #03-07A
+65 6836 1847

Fred Perry has a good look but the quality can vary dependent on the range and source of manufacture.  I like their knitted long sleeve polos.  A lot of their clothing is cut slim and therefore other than polos can be difficult to wear after a certain point in life.  The shirts have small collars that do not roll.  Their jackets are generally a bit over priced for what they are, but are best purchased in the sale which is normally around now.  The fabrics can have a high polyester count sometimes.  The UK madebitems are a welcome return but a lot more in price.

I noticed  Paul Weller wearing a Maison Kitsune monkey jacket a few weeks ago that was half the price of FP for essentially the same item.

Re: The Rake on harringtons

^^^ I was in the FP ion Orchard store just last week. It never seems to carry much stock - always seems to have a minimalist approach and is as much about the brand than it is about selling stuff. There were a few jackets, but I didn't look too closely as they don't generally carry anything in my size. i.e. XL.

Re: The Rake on harringtons

Ah yes, those stores. Indeed they never really carry much stock. I used to wear a bit of Fred Perry when I first got interested in clothing and mod stuff and all that. My brother had a MiB Harrington, was pretty nice and fit reasonably well. Just wondering how they stocked up against the other options.

@Cap Join the club. I'm the standard size S. Hard to get anything, anywhere. Especially on Carousell.

Re: The Rake on harringtons

In wondering how Fred Perry compare to other options, the summary is often more in price, for no extra in quality than anyone else, with sizes that favour the young but including the logo.

Re: The Rake on harringtons

Thanks, Scene. If such is the case, I'll save up for a natural JS one. Seems like one of the better options at the price.
