Saw this and thought of you gents. Laurence J Smith shetlands on offer from Superdenim for 95. Saw these whilst in Tokyo but didn't buy - lovely sweaters though. The mustard one is my favourite.

Re: I am after a new Shetland

Rather than start a new shetland thread, thought I would boost this - just got back from the Drakes Sample Sale - they have brushed shetlands for 55. Not a wide choice of colours, a pale but bright blue, a bright green and bright red were what was left, I got this plum colour which was the last one. They might restock, they also have loads of other knits as well as pocket squares, ties and scarves. Only found out about it whilst I was out.

Re: I am after a new Shetland

I noticed PRL currently has some made-in-Scottland brushed shetlands (with no visible logo). They're currently on sale for $150 but I wouldn't be surprised if an additional discount becomes available as xmas/post-xmas sales roll out. Some colors seem a bit feminine (pastels), but others look ok.

Nice score, Tom. I like that eggplant shade.

Re: I am after a new Shetland

I just received one of the PRL brushed lambswool/cashmere sweaters yesterday (purchased it for $100 on sale). It is relatively thin and non-fluffy for what I was expecting from a brushed sweater, but that probably has a lot to do with how thick my Press shaggy is as well as my Rugby brushed shetland. Also that it is made from Lambswool not Shetland. It is however a very nice looking sweater. I will be able to provide more feedback after i wear it.

Re: I am after a new Shetland

I ended up getting one of the PRL brushed sweaters too, in the "dusty green" color.

This is my first brushed sweater and I am having second thoughts on it now that ocbd says it's not as fluffy as the Press original....I kinda wanted that fluffy look. I'm wondering if this is going to be a case where I should have just paid the price for the original instead of saving a few bucks.

Re: I am after a new Shetland

Since shetland weather has arrived I've started looking for a few, any suggestions? I'm after a lighter weight knit as I already have a couple Shaggy Dogs. Tried the Harley's but did not like the quality, the Leith ones are great but don't fit me well as the waistband is not "elasticated".

Didn't like the Harley I had, the neck and the body lost its shape quite quickly. I guess I'll give the Jamieson's a go, anyone tried them?

Re: I am after a new Shetland

This might be the reason why Shetland wool is hard to find this year:

https://www.barneys.com/product/dries-v … 87179.html

I am conducting a Shetland experiment. I bought three in different colors, from three different suppliers, none of which are the suppliers usually discussed. I do expect to have to return all three. Expectations are low. Assuming the products are as disappointing as I expect, a second round of testing from different sources might be forthcoming.

Re: I am after a new Shetland

The first Shetland has arrived. Instead of 3, there will be 4; another was ordered today.

The first is from Genuine Scottish Knits, Eskvalley Knitwear Co. Ltd. I ordered a small in "clover."

Out of the bag:

The collar tag:

https://s1.postimg.org/9mbg7a192n/image.jpg

Color under bright light:

https://s1.postimg.org/4eg5kaatpr/image.jpg

Color under dim light:

https://s1.postimg.org/8fs4yodf27/image.jpg

Measurements:

Chest: 20" (50.8cm)
Sleeve: 25.5" (64.77cm)
Length: 27.5" (69.85cm)

All these measurements are big for a small, of course.

I'm 5'11", 155lbs. Chest is 37", and in knitwear I can generally tolerate up to 21" in the chest before something becomes too big to wear. Sleeve length is also fine for me, as I have a good reach at 34" in shirts, but the length is disappointing, and possibly does this item in. I'd really hope for a small to be no more than 26" long. As it is so long, it really tends to bunch up in the mid section.

Here are the measurements photos and one fit picture (terrible, but I'm a notoriously bad photographer with even less interest in it than ability):

https://s1.postimg.org/4awjmkfe4f/image.jpg

https://s1.postimg.org/1cdvtz8sz3/image.jpg

It's not Laurence Odie/Harley/Jamieson quality, but it feels and appears like a good piece of knitwear.

I paid $130 through Amazon for this piece. However, these are available at a much better price (about $77) direct from the company's website: https://www.genuinescottishknits.co.uk/mens.html. I have no idea what shipping would be, as I did not price that out.

I have a lambswool sweater that is similar to this Shetland, and the lambswool is a better fit, so this Shetland is likely going back. I like the color better than my lambswool (this is a lighter green), but it just doesn't fit well enough, and at $130 a Shetland better be closing in on perfection for me to keep it. I have had fleeting thoughts about doing my shrinking trick on it, but that's really only something I perform on a stretched out old sweater that I don't care to lose. I've found Shetlands to be the easiest of knits to shrink without loss though (RIP tan Lord Jeff!).

This Shetland is good value for someone who is tall and can size down, or someone who likes a longer Shetland. This small is imo sized like a medium-tall, and at that only good on someone on the smaller end of medium. I'm fairly tall for a person taking a small, and it is too long on me by a good bit. I cannot see this working on someone smaller in height, or body composition. Big guys can probably find a good fit without a problem.

Two more candidates are arriving tomorrow. I had the highest hopes for this one. Not a great omen, Kalchas.

Re: I am after a new Shetland

I ordered a vest from them and it was decent for the price, size large was a short trim fit. I didn't like the colour or pattern along the 'V' neck so sent it back.

Present have some nice shaggy Shetlands but are 120 each.

Re: I am after a new Shetland

First up today is a Jack Smith. These are hawked as "Designed in Australia." Yeah, we all know what this means. It is of course made in China, but it is 100% Shetland wool. I ordered a medium in navy for $55 and change with shipping included from Amazon. The price is now $60, just a few days later.

As I wrote above, I am usually a small, but this is what the sizing for these stated:

S 92cm (36.22in)
M 97cm (38.19in)

With a 37in chest, I went with the medium. Actual measurements I took:

Chest: 22" (55.8cm)
Sleeve: 25" (63.50cm)
Length: 26 1/8" (66.36cm)

Doubling the chest measurement I took gives 111.60cm. A far cry from the advertised 97cm. That's half a foot difference in the chest circumference. Bad, really bad. According to the company, the sweater I received would fit a man they consider a large (102cm) with ease.

The color and feel of this piece is better than I expected, but I didn't expect much. It's rougher than the Genuine Scottish above, but is about the same thickness. It lacks the saddle shoulder, and the finish is not on par with the Genuine Scottish. I'd say it's similar to one of the modern LL Bean Shetlands, and just as boxy.

I don't think I'm going to exchange this for a small. It's just too much bother for a piece that isn't that impressive. These might work for someone on a low budget, and who is willing to fuss with sizing, but even at $60 I don't think it's worth the money. Maybe at half that price. The Genuine Scottish above does not cost that much more than this, and is far superior.

Besides the basic colors navy and charcoal on offer from this brand, the colors are unimpressive. https://www.amazon.com/Shetland-Cardiga … s_ap_1_fbt

Re: I am after a new Shetland

Next is a Pendleton. I ordered a small in "Scarlett Red", apparently named after Ms. Johansson rather than an actual shade of red. This is the thinnest of the Shetlands I received so far. The two above are about equal in "plushness." This is made in China of 100% Shetland wool. It's machine washable for what that's worth (absolutely nothing...to me.)

Measurements:

Chest: 20.5" (52.07cm)
Sleeve: 26" (66.04cm)
Length: 27 3/8" (69.53cm)

Those measurements are very close to the Genuine Scottish above. This has a slightly larger waist (something I didn't include in previous measurements) at 19.5", versus 19" in the Genuine Scottish. This means it fits even less well than the Genuine Scottish.

The one thing I like about the Pendleton is the color. It really is a nice dark red/burgundy. I can also see the thinness being an advantage for some who are in warm indoor environments. But thin is not what a Shetland is supposed to be. The Genuine Scottish is superior in all ways to the Pendleton in that the Genuine Scottish is thicker, has a slightly better fit, better finish, and is less expensive.

I cannot see taking the Pendleton over the Genuine Scottish unless one: (a) likes the color of a particular Pendleton; (b) wants a thinner Shetland; or (c) cares to machine wash the garment.

Got a forest green jumper from Present today - 22" ptp and 24.5" front length in a large. The 'silver' aka light grey they do is a nice colour.
