Ivy: The Yuppie Years

Just wanted a place to put some New Yorker scans I'm accumulating from the '70s and '80s that aren't Late '70s prep... Kind of the other side of the excellent pre-Boom Years thread... Feel free to contribute...

Ultimate Yuppie id Patrick Bateman has a couple on his walls in the movie version of American Psycho...

The book of American Psycho is repellent (I ended up not finishing it, there's only so much I'll subject myself to) but the best parts are those dealing with consumer culture - that's really a good satire of the Yuppie culture. I always felt like Ellis could have written a short story about that, maybe implied some darker stuff, and left it at that... Those parts are often laugh-out-loud funny... The incredible level of violence is (pardon the pun) overkill for me, it deadens (again, I'm sorry) the actual satire and the real message of the book is completely lost in the gore, which has of course been glorified by raincoat-wearing fanboys (who've never read the book) who love Bateman but embody the exact culture of empty imitation that Ellis intended to skewer...

Still, "Hip To Be Square" is a great song... and Huey Lewis didn't like American Psycho...

Re: Ivy: The Yuppie Years

/\  what a hack job the movie is ... needless to say the book was not something I would read

the Longo pics in Bateman's apartment are telling details though

speaking of David Byrne by the way, I think he might have gotten some of his moves from Longo .....

So cool. I love that cover Stan. I have it up on some old blog post somewhere. You know I loved the bicycle. It is my favorite mode of transportation.

BB & Stan, NBs in both. Spot on.

Re: Ivy: The Yuppie Years

Yes! I was looking for a high quality version of this to post - you found one, I see... There are some fun illustrations from this online too, the actual thing is hard to find and I suspect not really worth the money... Gucci again though... I guess it fits in better with the Yuppie look than in the OPH... Still, while I'm guilty of many of these, a Gucci briefcase is not one of them...

Back to the New Yorker, the genesis of this thread - pretty much every brand on the cover of the Yuppie Handbook was in there during the 1980s - Coach, Cartier, Rolex, LL Bean, Cross pens (and Crane stationery)... Big Burberry ads in every issue...

Speaking of 80s-90s stuff - Duck Head is selling clothes again. No yellow labels though. It all looks fairly anonymous.
