Sierra Designs 60/40 Mountain Parka 50%

If you fancy one of these now could a good time as they are $187 at present:

http://www.sierradesigns.com/p-445-mountain-parka.aspx

Not bad as the few shops that sell them in the UK ask around the £295 mark. Trouble is Sieera Designs don't ship outside the US so you need to work out a way to get it over here.

Re: Sierra Designs 60/40 Mountain Parka 50%

I have found etsy to be useful for mountain parkas. I was fortunate enough to nab a navy and a tan Woolrich and a burgundy (with wool lining) LL Bean version for a very fair price, and all made in USA.

Perhaps the Sierra Designs is the more desirable one, but the only time I had a chance to buy one of these was in Tokyo for Y42,000, too rich for me...

$187 is do-able, seeing as I paid about that for a new Penfield mountain parka a couple of years ago, though I found the quality to be lacking compared to the older ones I have from different brands.

I bought one (new) from Japan - seems to be the only place they are available. Nice jacket but I think a little steep given how thin they are. I suppose it makes them all the better for layering.

Re: Sierra Designs 60/40 Mountain Parka 50%

I got the Tan one (long) as even in Japan they had very few stockists in US/EU L. The Green or Orange would have been my first pick.

Worth noting that some of the range for the Japan market is actually made in China but with the USA 60/40 fabric. The green down vest was like this so I passed on it.

I wore my old LL Bean Baxter State Parka today and was very happy in it as always... It is similarly quite thin and quite warm at the same time. Almost exactly the same design as the pic posted by woof, but only one chest pocket... You can find a ton on eBay in great shape...

Re: Sierra Designs 60/40 Mountain Parka 50%

I visited my tan Woolrich 60/40 parka and my navy L. L. Bean Baxter State rain parka last month, they were fine and told me to say hello to you all

I remonstrated with the Woolrich parka about the ripoff of Sierra Designs that went down so many years ago according to the article above but was met with a statute of limitations defense, so all is forgiven .....

still haven't had a chance to wear the things in years though

Potential options, not an endorsement - Cape Heights, Mountain Research, Garbstore, Nanamica, Mt Rainer Design, North Face Purple Label...

Beaut.

This Japanese shop has a great selection of their items if anyone else is looking: https://www.rakuten.co.jp/d-park/

Including some rather dubious colours...

Re: Sierra Designs 60/40 Mountain Parka 50%

Just my own thoughts on that topic: the (Italian) Holubar interpretation is very nice in terms of manufacturing - very well done, feels great... I had the down version for a week last year as I got it on a budget. BUT - the fabric is too nice, not sturdy enough, not authentic 60/40. My own parka got two scars after wearing it two times. Ont he contrary I cannot praise the 60/40 fabric of Penfield enough. Sturdy, well fabricated, mountain proof if you want. So, if I ever get around a Penfield version (I would prefer the wool lined one) for good money (under €150,--)I will grab it. Or - of course - a vintage LL Bean or Woolrich.
