I like the three holes (no pun intended) with welted Chukka boots a lot! For Crepe soles (Clarks Desert Boots, Original Playboys, Hush Puppies, George Cox...) two holes is better, more casual...
They are a little higher on the ankle, too, like some Chelsea boots. It's a nice touch and I think they go very well with shorter trousers, definitely no break. Those shoes really lose something if they get covered up under long, wide trouser bottoms. Something that would scream "high water!"... half masts with a pair of Weejuns, would be fine with those boots!

However, three holes is more is more common with George Boots, I think, a more military, less elegant style of boots.


BTW, The suede makes a nice contrast with mohair/ sharkskin/ tonik. Classic combination with a sharp lounge suit. The subtle shimmer of the cloth and the matte texture of the shoes. Usually your suits, at least business suits, are made of a matte fabric, like worsted wool flannel. And you achieve contrast in texture with a shiny slik tie and shiny, well polished shoes. With these boots you can go another way. It makes a difference, but doesn't stand out extremely, if the suit is not too flash.
