Hush Puppies were popular with Mods 1964/65ish worn with levis with small turn ups and red socks I remember. Easy to get hold of and an alernative to bucks. IMO they fit in with the IL look.

I recall my surfer cousins in California wore hush puppies in the '70s-'80s. They stuck out in my mind. Today I see a few surfer kids (and the odd dad or two) wearing them.

I still wear them. The current models are a bit on the bulky side but vintage deadstock still turn up from time to time.
Has anyone ever incorporated a Hush Puppies hat? Most of the ones that turn up are more on the Roger Kaputnik side of things, but it seems like I recall seeing a sleeker model that one could picture Jimmy McGriff or the kids from the Life mag Watts pics wearing.

I met McGriff in 1988 (ish). A very surreal experience for me as I'd never previously seen someone from my record collection in person. In the words of my mate who accompanied me: he looks like a maths teacher from Birmingham. Which of course didn't matter a jot, as he still played the Hammond like a legend. The rest of his band were killing it too.
I understand your reference though - I vaguely recall that on one of his early albums he's sporting a pork pie.

Yeah, I think I was picturing "One Of Mine". I think I've seen Hush Puppies hats with a similar silhouette, maybe in an old Ebony ad.

I've met him and seen him live twice, bizarrely enough. Again in 1992.
He used to say that really he was a bluesman, which probably explains why I got so into his music. I recall that in the 1990s a lot of young people who weren't into blues really got into him through the funky stuff he did in the late 60s early 70s.

That makes sense. I worked in a record store most of the second half of the previous decade. More of a rock store, but the jazz section was decent at times. The early Sue LP's sat there gathering dust for $4, the solid state and Groove Merchant titles would usually disappear fairly quickly.
To keep this on topic, I occasionally wore Hush Puppies on my shift.

Slimmm reminds me of my old Dad, loading up with cut-outs to bring back to England. There was still something on the hi-fi when he dropped dead of a stroke. Could have been Louis, Pepper, the MJQ, Anita O'Day - his tastes were broad. Oh, those lovely cut-outs. I seem to recall a sleeve showing the MJQ in shorts and Madras jackets. Jason Jules and our Gibson could capture that look.
