HBH,
The news about Lux hit me hard as well. I got into Cramps at an impressionable time. Aside from making great music themselves, they were a great sign-post to other things. My love for cult films, exotica, raw R&B and rockabilly have serious roots in the interview Lux and Ivy did for the Incredibly Strange Music book and those two compilation album series of the songs they covered.

It although charted in the UK with the arrival of psychedelia...
It's a crude 60s Punk/ Teen Beat/ Garage Band thing. Primitive, basic R&B with a catchy organ riff and an easy cheesy singalong...
insane novelty stuff...

The Cramps - Surfin' Bird
I just had to post this, thinking about Lux Interior, singer of the Cramps, King of Camp and all things bad and sleazy... RIP LUX!!!
for those who don't know:
"February 4, 2009
Lux Interior, lead singer of The Cramps, passed away this morning due to an existing heart condition at Glendale Memorial Hospital in Glendale, California at 4:30 AM PST today. Lux has been an inspiration and influence to millions of artists and fans around the world. He and wife Poison Ivy’s contributions with The Cramps have had an immeasurable impact on modern music.
The Cramps emerged from the original New York punk scene of CBGB and Max’s Kansas City, with a singular sound and iconography. Their distinct take on rockabilly and surf along with their midnight movie imagery reminded us all just how exciting, dangerous, vital and sexy rock and roll should be and has spawned entire subcultures. Lux was a fearless frontman who transformed every stage he stepped on into a place of passion, abandon, and true freedom. He is a rare icon who will be missed dearly.
CAN YOUR PUSSY DO THE DOG? "
Sad news indeed Hank. I was once a fully paid up member of the "Legion of the Cramped" fan club. I adored them. A legendary band with an awesome front man. Believe it or not I have an Ivy related memory of The Cramps. Going to see them at the Hammersmith Palais (1985?) I wore a black woolen lightweight Brooks Bros sports coat recently purchased for £5 in a vintage clothes store in Bristol. Woefully ignorant of its 3/2 button styling a spent about an hour the night before with a steam iron trying to press the lapel back into 'shape'. Oh dear. All the while cursing whichever fool had previously pressed it. One lives and learns! I still have the jacket but never wear it as it feels too big. I was quite happy with loose and slouchy back in the day.

Snow allowing I'm seeing JJ this weekend for the first Groovin' At The I Spot Cafe event...
So that's me & him with a curry and some booze going through my old records then.
Well... It's a start!

My two Buddy Holly faves are covers: Brown-eyed handsome man and Ain't got no home. Both great (and for some reason, I can't find the Buddy's version of either on youtube).
On a side note, did anyone hear that conversation between Buddy Holly and Paul Cohen of Decca Records that's included on the 1957: the complete recordings? Buddy is asking Cohen if Decca can release some recent sessions he recorded since they cut him off their label, and Cohen makes it pretty clear that Decca has full plans of burying the stuff. A nice guy getting the wrong end of the big label stick. It has to be one of the most depressing things I've ever heard.
Haven't heard it... but I don't know the complete recordings...

What am I doing here, with another man's wife.
I'm shaking in fear, but I'm having the time of my life.
I'm a fool to put my life in jeopardy.
But I can't help myself, she makes sweet love to me.
This ain't the way I was brought up,
But I am sure enough caught up in this chain of love.
I think it's the lyrical equivalent to Jim Thompson's damned men.
