There's a great pic of Gore and arch-nemesis W.F. Buckley that I should dig up (I think the whole conflict bothered Buckley more than Vidal. I think Vidal just liked winding Will up).

Tony, I also liked your comment about LBJ. We should get some photos of him up here.

all people on the far right or left are easy to wind up - why just look at Old Uncle Russell - just mention that 'Trad' is the only way to go and he wants to break out the baseball bats and indulge in a little 'ultra violence' while singing in the rain - dontcha know

It's true.

Chensvold called me a "Fascist" towards the end  & a chap whom I now actually really esteem even called me a 'Sociopath' back in the day here on our esteemed fora...

And dear old Valentino Man (what was his name?) - A really nice cat, anyway - Called me a 'Sadist' too...

I dunno.

I want the omelette so much... I guess that's why I'm such a bitch to the iEggs...

stop me B4 i post again -

Re: The Ivy League Style: The Boom Years.

Buckley's a funny one. On the one hand, he would go and do just absurd piss-in-the-well things like publish a damning book about his alma matter soon after graduation and run a semi-racist mayoral campaign, which would suggest a total wing-nut. On the other, he would be friends with liberals like economist Galbraith and have dinner with Charlie Chaplin, even though Buckley thought he was a communist.

My favorite story about him was that he decided to try smoking grass but due to his desire not to break the law, sailed his boat out to coastal waters, smoked up and fell asleep watching I am Curious (Yellow) (http://papercuts.blogs.nytimes.com/2008 … f-buckley/).

I also liked that he was sort of embarrassed when people started describing his ivy-style as sexy, when he got his own show.

My point is that I think he was at least a bit more mellow than a lot of the people who claim to be following his lineage. However, Mike, I definitely agree with your overall point. There is also an argument has been made many times (and is certainly applicable to the fora) that one will never see more vigorous debate as between two people who basically agree on the same thing.

Re: The Ivy League Style: The Boom Years.

- I've been saving this one for a while.... Shall we? Everybody is dead now after all...

David Nivens's verdict on Buckley handed down to me from Homo to Homo to me:

"hoho" said Niven to a chum after turning on his heels and bidding farewell to Buckley in the street in Gstaad.

But he said it in such a crisp, clipped English voice that 'It sounded charming'.

Fact.

Please sue me on this - I will win your money & Lord knows I need it - Plus you will suddenly realise how well connected I am!

Loved those Lee Marvin shots from D&F. Dug out my copy of the "M Squad" soundtrack in their honour. Great, driving big band flavoured jazz. Here are some more Playboy goodies. This time all from July 1967. Hope they float your collective boat.

A further installment in vintage ivy adventures. "The New Yorker" Nov 5th 1960. What wouldn't I give for that Gant/Paul Stuart number in olive and blue? oh well.

Staceyboy,

I'm a sucker for shoe ads. I swear those J&Ms are flirting w/ me. I really like the split-toe. I'm also really impressed w/ the script on that Florsheim ad. That Pacific guy really has it put together as well. The tie's great. A major thanks for posting.

The gif you're getting is a transparent image "laid on top" to prevent the picture underneath to be hotlinked. Long story... I rehosted it for all to see here.
