Re: Inane Post of the Day 2012: The End of the Sartorial World Edition

Shaver says: "There is much to be said for the discipline and the habits generated by an aspiration to improve one's appearance. The reflection upon how one fits into this world, the thought and consideration required, and also a more acute appreciation of the efforts of others in that sphere.

I am minded to consider the suit a level playing field upon which all men may express themselves, either well or otherwise. Those who choose to disdain it, all well and good, but those who sneer at 'suits' do rather give the unfortunate impression that they feel simply unable to compete in civilised society"

Can anyone remember the S.F thread where a bloke bought all these beautiful Santoni handmade shoes and only wears them on the carpet at home so the soles don't get ruined? l can't find it.

An occasional minor irritant is effortlessly yet deftly dispatched.  This irrepressible, but ineffectual, member seems unable to learn from his past defeats and once more tangles in vain with our hero Shaver.

''The Barbour is, in truth, often badly cast as but a fashion accessory and unless it is used often, and used well, it will lend the rather unfortunate appearance that it's owner foolishly considers it as such.''

I'm sorry, but whether your wax is worn in or not, doesn't stop you from wearing it just to be seen to be owning one, the truth is they are sweaty, smelly, pieces of crap, their quilts do their job for that period where summer mornings get cold, and the first bit of chill in the air, after that they are useless. Like with most outdoor clothing brands like Barbour, etc have been superseded, in terms of practicality, so anyone I see wearing a Barbour now in my mind is doing so for the look, one thing I'd say are the pockets are amble enough to carry a whole stock load of dog biscuits, but that's it, wax jackets for anyone who really does go about in the outdoors probably can find better now than waxed cotton.

Is there anything worse then those well worn green Barbours? So evocative of that brief moment in the late 80s when the London sloane-ranger on a country weekend went viral for a year or more. I have a black one and they are smelly, useless in winter and is badly in need of re-waxing, which isn't going to happen any time soon. Good for carrying shotgun cartridges though, ideal for an armed robber.

Re: Inane Post of the Day 2012: The End of the Sartorial World Edition

Men have become so pouncey that the great aussie shed has become almost extinct. lt was always a sign of manhood when a bloke owned and worked in his shed, but now the modern day men are not even worthy of being called men, they are just a bunch of boys who are all soft. Very few blokes around these days, it's all pouncey boys...the type l call `son'.

l puff my chest out, speak in a rough gruff bushman's voice and say "aye son". The men in my family did it and l am carrying on the tradition.

Re: Inane Post of the Day 2012: The End of the Sartorial World Edition

Right well here's the thing I did landscape gardening for 7 years and worked in a sawmill for 3, manual labour is fucking awful, even destroys the biggest and strongest, mainly because your body is never given the rest it needs to recuperate, so no matter how strong you are or tough, it really doesn't matter, at some point you get broken. And it is hell, there is no romance or charm about it, I think it is important to balance an office job with exercise, and you will feel all the better for it, but come back after 10 years of complete over exertion and tell me it's fun, now I reside in a warm shop all day, selling clothes, and I wouldn't go back to hard work for all the money in the world.

Re: Inane Post of the Day 2012: The End of the Sartorial World Edition

Go give it a go Shoo, then come back and tell me that. The body needs to rest and even with the best nutrition, without the time to rest properly in between periods of exertion it cannot repair itself, that is what does you in. It isn't like training in sport where you build in rest periods, this is 5 days straight, basically remain bed bound for 2 days, then start all over again. Repeat that for 10 years, by 30 years old I was done.
