Brooks hated the term 'Preppy' even more !
Press did sell 'Ivy' once. Brooks inspired the whole shebang and the style historians dubbed the whole lot 'Ivy League' for the classic American Natural Shoulder style.
So within 'Ivy' are the self concious Ivy crowd (Press, et al) and those who also sold it rejecting the tag as the load of marketing crap it was (Brooks & maybe Chipp, who else might there have been?).
The self concious 'Ivy' crowd were the ones who realy sylised and exaggerated the look ultimately into 'Jivy-Ivy' and utter decadence. Brooks stayed far more conservative.
And less us not forget, J.Press is currently owned by the Japanese: the most savvy Ivy practioners outside of the boom period.
J.Press is most definitely producing and selling Ivy; at least, some of it.

But I gave presentations and attended an Ivy League school in soft shouldered suit jackets and flat fronted trousers. Surely that counts for something...
Same deal with 'Preppy'.
Aspiration for the many, reality for the few.
^And with preppy, the few can have it!
I might go preppy when I retire to Martha's Vineyard (If I can convince my wife), except the only preppies are the tourists. Get's cold there over late Autumn and Winter.

What always foxes a certain crowd are those for whom Ivy is neither a social class linked aspiration or the reality of the clothes their grandaddy wore (My father considered my Brooks Makers stuff utter rags)...
Horror of horrors - What if clothes were just nice clothes that you liked ?
If I was motivated by any form of aspiration in my choice of Ivy it would have to be an aspiration to be Black, given that I first knew and fell in love with the style as one worn by Black men in old photograhs.
See how silly all this gets ?
Just get dressed & stop being so daft, world !
I bet the East Coast or New England Look got used as well. What's in a name?
When it comes to Marketing, everything !
That's the name of the game.
I think it was. Less staid? Less traditional? More modern? More playful?
Keeping the faith:
