No favorite these days. Of course, some years ago, it was the A-E outlet in Cabazon, but that has been gone for about four years now. At least it left me with a lifetime supply of A-E seconds, the quintessential iGent shoo.

Ronnie Briggs suffered from terrible home sickness and his health started to fail because he went back on the booze. I use to be acquainted with the chap who ran the tours to go and see Briggs in his apartment in the Lapa district of Rio. It was not as the British press painted it, a hovel, it was a large and decent place, part of a much more grand colonial stye mansion and he had a big enough private bar with a full size snooker table.

He was quite the raconteur by all accounts and the stories about him being broke on his arrival in Brazil having paid everybody off is all true.

It was home sickness and not wanting to risk Brazilian doctors that saw him return.

He got to the age were he couldn't booze anymore without it effecting his health, but unfortunately he made a living by drinking and regailing Brits on the piss with his true stories of gangsterism. And so, he decided to cut a deal and return to Blighty. By the way, I do think not allowing his son into the UK to see him was unfair (not sure how this ultimately played out), as it wasn't his fault his dad was a bankrobber.
