Pleased to meet all of you!

Greetings all,

Since I've posted on the styleforum.net somebody pm-ed me and said this site is for the real clothes lovers, so I think I might as well join in and share some thoughts here.

I am Doctor Muller and I reside in Germany. I like to travel throughout the world to search for the perfect tailor experience and so far have been happy with some small experiences which have been unhappy for me.

Here I am in Italy!

I look forward to seeing more and sharing from this wonderful place. But unfortunately I can not take all these wonderful pictures I see of shoes here for my own things because the only time I have a digital camera is when my son visits. I am German so I use a Leica.

Dr. Muller, welcome!

I hope you will share stories regarding your bespoke experiences.

I think you will find the atmosphere here very congenial. We care about clothing but we don't take ourselves too seriously.

Welcome!  Liking angled pockets doesn't make us unusual people.  We just have a different "slant" on style.

Happiness is that elusive way.  Seems like its hard to have your cake and eat it too.

Regardless welcome to this less than geometric cast and crew that is never obtuse when they are acute.

You may think they are a striping checkered square lot of quadrangles.

Tip of "The Hat" to you sir!

Re: Pleased to meet all of you!

A quick hello from my hotel room in Italy again!

I promise you guy I'll talk more about my good and bad bespoke experiences once I'm back in my homeland.

Marc,

I too had  issues with Fallan and Harvey. In the end I rather wasted my 50% deposit on my suit because right at the second fitting I knew they f***** it up badly. Mind you, they aren't the only one, there are a lot more tailors around the world still have my unclaimed suits hanging in there shops.

The tailors I'm now using are John Coggin, who also makes for Mr. Roetzel, and Caraceni in Milano.

That's about it for this post and will write more during the week.

Re: Pleased to meet all of you!

Another chance to talk about my bespoke experiences:

I just want to let out all the bad ones first so this time it's the turn of Jones, Chalk and Dawson.

Two years ago when I was in London I ordered a bespoke tweed jacket for 1400GBP. To be fair the fit is quite good, however when I inspected the lining inside the jacket it was all sewn by machine. Instinctively I confronted this matter head on with the cutter and all he said was it made not much difference. He then reluctantly said they'd redo it by hand and asked why I didn't mention it while placing the order.

Isn't it the standard practice for all bespoke tailors around the globe to hand stitch all linings?

Re: Pleased to meet all of you!

I understand the cheaper bespoke tailors might use machine to stitch the linings but for an old firm such as Jones, Chalk and Dawson I have to say that's not acceptable - because they shouldn't cut any corner and because every suit they turn out has to be a piece of art.

Re: Pleased to meet all of you!

Hello again,

To be honest apart from the lining the tweed jacket was wonderfully made and I always got compliment whenever I wore it. Maybe we people in Germany always prefer the military cut, or anything that's military.

Anyway enough said about Jones, Chalk and Dawson. The topic of today is Huntsman.

At the first fitting of my suit the cutter, with a salesman by his side, asked me to put on the pants first. The moment I got hold of the pants and saw the back darts I almost fainted. Let me try my best to describe them - the darts were cut far too deep and long, at least 14cm, and went about 6cm below the back pocket. I still can't think of a word other than ugly to describe them.

It was only the starter of the horror. When I put the pants on my first thought was Brigitte Bardot must've worn Huntsman. They were cut so tight that the 4 pleats all burst out and I suddenly found myself being a 3 legged creature in the mirror. The salesman even had the timidity to say it's perfect on me while the cutter suggested himself and the pants maker did a brilliant job.

And the jacket wasn't great either. Basically it was one size too small for me.

Needless to ask where the suit is.

Re: Pleased to meet all of you!

FilmNoirBuff,

Where the half made suit is you guess is as good as mine. I didn't even bother to turn up for the second fitting.

I did ask if the pants could be let out a bit and they agreed eventually. However the cutter said the long darts at the back was his style of cut. He even showed me his own back and other pants they made for other people and said I'd get used to it. Bollocks! I've never seen such odd looking darts on any pants.

As for the jacket, there was just no build up on the chest area. The shortcomings of my middle age torso were laid bare for all to see. I have a lot of very fitted and flattering jackets from various tailors, they were all constructed to hide my beer belly.

Re: Pleased to meet all of you!

I have had enough botched "bespoke" suits made to dress half the world's population, all of which I tossed in the trash.  Perplexed, people ask why not return them to the tailors for fixing, and the reason is 2-fold: First, it's too aggravating and time-consuming, and I have a life.  Second, given the incompetence of the tailors to have produced such monstrosities, it's basically pointless to try to have them make right what they couldn't get right originally.  Wasn't that Einstein's definition of insanity, doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results?

Re: Pleased to meet all of you!

Marc,

I totally agree with you. There's absolutely no point in telling incompetent tailors to fix or alter anything they're just incapable of. For me it's usually after the second fitting I'd make my mind up whether the suit worth the while to be collected. My philosophy is that I'd rather waste my deposit than having a fight with those inept tailors simply because I know they could never turn out the end products I envisaged.

The Huntsman cutter that cut my suit wasn't Richard Anderson. It was about 12 years ago and I don't have his name in my memory. The guy was quite young at that time. The other negative thing I want to point out about going into big tailor houses is that your suit might be cut and made by some teenager apprentices but you're still charged same price for that.

Re: Pleased to meet all of you!

Welsh and Jeffries

When I was in London some years ago, I literally visited every firm on Savile Row, starting with Gieves and ending with Welsh and Jeffries, where the supposedly legendary Malcolm Plews worked.  Met with the late Francis Morris, a nice chap through whom I commissioned two suits.  Several weeks later, I met with Francis in New York for the fitting and what was clear to both of us was that the trousers were cutfor someone maybe 75 lbs heavier than myself, certainly with a waistline 5 inches wider than mine.  Pleats were the size of drapes.   Francis assured me the trousers would be corrected and the entire suit would be shipped to me with the properly-made trousers.  Several weeks later, I received the suit, but the trousers were never fixed, or if they were, not properly so as I was still swimming in them.   Contacted Francis about this, and he assured me the problem would be made right. I proceeded to ship the trousers back, weeks later they arrive again STILL too large, as if they never touched them.  At that point, I just threw up my hands and gave up.  I did get a decent tax deduction for them by donating to a local charity for the homeless, where some lucky bloke is resplendent in Savile Row suits.  And, if he has a pot belly, the trousers must look lovely.

Re: Pleased to meet all of you!

Marc,

I have a good suit made by Mr. Plews, although the lapel gorge was cut a little bit too low for my liking. Bar that the cut and made are top notch I've to say.
