I'd say Pullover is the correct original term. Popover is later & to my ear a likkle bit twee and slightly camp - "Just pop your shirt over your head, Sweetie".

When I first heard 'popover' (on the MB) the image that came to mind was the male version of the 'muffin top', with allusion to the shapes of the respective pastries.

Now that I know the MB community intends to mean some affectation for 'pullover shirt' (perhaps made of poplin?), I agree that the word is juvenile and should be abandoned after the soft palate has formed.
