I'm in the market for a soft leather soled shoe, thinking of either goi g for a classic Gucci loafer or perhaps stemar ..would you be able to recommend one with your experience please? Ps I know Gucci gets a really bad press on the blogosphere but I quite like the softness of the sole .. for smart casual wear...any thoughts?

l only have one thing to say about loafers with no elastic under them, eg penny loafers. Get them so the instep area is tight and starts hurting after an hour of wear. Penny style loafers always stretch and in my experience they need to be fitted initially so it's hard to get your foot under the instep area of the loafer. Should take 8 or 9 wears before you are able to wear them a full day in comfort. Also choose a loafer nice and firm at the heel, but not too tight. Loafers are very hard to get a good fit from rtw, it's a bit of an artform.
So don't fit them brutally tight, but fit them tight enough where they are going to hurt your instep after a short time of wearing them. l can't say anything of any more value, but what l said is very important when loafers lack any elastic.

anyone got experience of wearing either of these 2 shoe brands? gucci loafers seem to be a bit cheaply put together but sort of could work as a gaudy knock around loafer .. perhaps a bit overpriced at ~£350.
