I see there's a bit of a heated debate about Saphir Renovateur going on over at Style Forum.Never used it myself. What's it got going for it?
The only people debating on S.F about Saphir Renovateur would be the usual nubs, same goes with the gemming debates. NONE of them are worth the time of day even talking to.
* wipe down the shoos with a warm cloth, let dry
* put on Saphir Renovateur
* use paste if you feel it's needed.
* an occasional wax a couple of times a year.
Mr X showed me shoos he moisturises regularly made from lower mid end leather, yet he has worn them often for the last 30 years. His leather is silky and almost damp, it's like a way you don't see many shoos. He showed me alot and i've never been the same since. John was the same, he almost fell over when l told him l don't moisturise my shoos after every wear, and then gave me the BIG shoo polish talk that was almost identicle to Mr X's two hour shoe polish talk. John has shoes made from mid end leather last 30 years too, and it has that special damp feel that usual polish never achieves.
btw, Saphir is just one great brand, there are plenty of others too, but l can't think of their names, but l don't think they can be bought from English speaking countries. Two great French brands, a German brand and some other good brands.

What makes me laugh is how so many igents regard Nick Horween as a leather expert because he now runs his old man's business, he might be more knowledgable now, but he didn't know much a few years ago. Nick's only been around in that business for about 4 or 5 years and it was actually the igents that taught him about the nature of shell cordovan LOL. Remember when Nick used to say shit like
`l'm not sure what you mean when you talk about shell cordovan welting up when shoes get wet in rain'
and
`i'm not sure what this white stuff is you talk anout on the shell'.
lt's like, dude, have you ever worn a pair of shell cordovan shoes?
Does anyone really take anything from SF seriously?

(corrected some mistakes, now it doesn't sound so dumb or nubby tshh).
Fantastic.
There is a fine line between moisturizing too little and too much. It is clear that leather drys out and part of the responsibility is perspiration that evaporates leaving behind slightly corrosive substances as well as sun damage. Additionally about the equilibrium of moisture between environment and leather, this occurs at levels of 70% relative humidity and greater and I simply don,t know of many indoor places that are that humid.
The issue arises when you moisturize with improper substances which become sticky and trap dirt which abrades the leathers. Renouvateur does not do this as it does not polymerize or remain oily. Renouvateur is quality stuff. Stay away from neets foot oil though as it either stays oily or becomes sticky- a real dirt trap. Lots of moisturizers contain improper oils - you will know which ones because they will be very inexpensive.
wax = bad for leather.
cream polish Saphir vs. cream polish Meltonian (less than 1/2 the price) = no discernable difference.
New/ unworn shoes need conditioner + polish.
Worn shoes (that have been polished several times) need conditioner MUCH more than additional polish.
