The best dressers in history. But who will carry the torch?

The mainstream forums often put forward folk like Cary Grant and Fred Astaire as 'top dressers' of their day, while the Ivy boys seem to get a lot of inspiration from people like Steve McQueen. All these folk are history. Which contemporary 'best dressers' will inspire future clothes lovers?

I honestly cannot think of any contemporary best dressers that will inspire anyone. Standards continue to decline fast in London, even in the City. The Duke of Kent remains stylish and as does the Prince of Wales when he leaves his patched Lobbs at home.

I think most of the better dressers are those actors dressed by designers for shows. Sometimes they get it right and sometimes they dont. I suppose a lot of it is how much research they do vs. how much of it is product placement and flights of fancy.

Usually they have their ear to the ground about the latest styles. The coolest, most enviable leading men (Whether it is a teenage vampire series or a straight-man on a woman's TV show or a even the hero of a biker gang.) are almost always best dressed in the latest style which may indicate the dandiacal code is alive and well and within us all.

Recently, on the Late Night talk show with David letterman and audience member (or his wife) said that letterman wasnt very well dressed. If on considers the way the couple were dressed (and worse, the town they were from) and that Letterman gets his suits from Corvato, it might demonstrate that the well dressed genie will never put back into its sartorial bottle.

Re: The best dressers in history. But who will carry the torch?

There are certainly role models for the younger dressers. There always are.

But I doubt of these will have any lasting influence.

Interestingly (or not) I have been having things made for far longer than I have been posting on the clothing boards, longer than the internet has been mainstream in fact. I didn't seek any inspiration from the movie stars or suchlike of yore.

I just picked the cloth I liked and just let the tailor do his thing.

The only 'oldie' I rate is the DoW, who was a genuine innovator.

As for the rest, my late grandfather dressed better.

...and that is probably where I soaked it up from.

If you put some one up to idolatry, then you are probably missing the point.

That said, there are some well dressed folks out there. Brian Williams from NBC news is classically well put together. Mat Ryan, QB for the Atlanta Falcons does a fairly good job, and RGIII from the Skins is usually right on.

Surely, the simple answer is that the torch-bearers are - the i-cons?

He did look great in "Love With a Proper Stranger", "Bullitt", "Thomas Crown Affair" and many other movies. Also a good dresser in his spare time, as the Claxton photos suggest. Very stylish, just like Newman and Perkins.

Grant and Astaire were also well dressed, of course! Isn't it possible to like them all?
