Marketing - Your Thoughts

It seems advertising and marketing although no longer at the point of being an artform like it was in the 70's and 80's, seem to have become a lot more subtle in the last few years, but still ever present, try to pedal us stuff and play on our insecurities. One such thing at the moment is protein powders to young people who really don't need them, on the premise it will see them to some image of physical perfection , I'm not sure they even know what they are buying when they come in my store or at least what it does, and the dangers of having to much, and then I saw all the adverts on youtube, and realised the advertising machine was still as powerful as ever, influencing people daily.

So my questions are as follows.. you can answer them specifically to clothes

Can things just be sold on merit, do they have to go along with a lifestyle? How important is popular culture to everyday people? What are the goal nowadays? Still selling sex? And with the new lifestyle explosions we've had in the last 5-10 years thanks to the net, can mass-marketing work like it used to? Also, are you still effected by advertising, or like with many people who picked up on snake-oil salesmen many moons ago?

And one question do you think blogs like Ivy Style, and the more I-genty ones replace, better or worsen, the image of the brands they're looking to sell their 'real world' advertising too?

Re: Marketing - Your Thoughts

Very old-school questions which I'm sure don't reflect old-school thinking.

Advertising and Marketing are so different now. The best stuff is Anti-Advertising & Anti-Marketing just now. We sell 'Smoking Cat Vintage' by making it impossible to buy. And so it sells.

You need to know the trade inside out and then do the opposite just now. Next there'll be a vogue for 'Straight Ads' - People are already talking about it and checking out stuff like old Fairy Liquid Ads from the early days.

I put in around 20 years in the biz and still keep in touch. 'Adam' (Advertising & Marketing) never stands still.

Maybe you need to keep more in touch. Straight ads have been fashionable again for about 2 years. The Fairy Liquid and Aquafresh ads were two of the first.  Weetabix, Corn Flakes and Um Bongo have all followed suit.

Thing is Jim, you help sell things to people that want them already, it's pretty easy to sell heart attack victims Warfarin. How do you sell an Eskimo, snow?

l haven't seen a t.v add in around 25 years.
l haven't heard a radio add in about 7 years.
l have never seen or looked at youtube adds (l turn down the sound and look away until it has finished).

I will NEVER buy into forced nonsense EVER!!! l am only open to print advertising very very occasionally.

Re: Marketing - Your Thoughts

There is a basic misunderstanding of marketing here. There are no generic rules - each brand/product must have its own marketing strategy to reach its target market effectively. There is no such thing as anti-marketing, it's just a different form of communicating and selling.

Contrary to lies of FNB and Woofboxer, I (and most of the other "Buff Bastards") have been banned from posting on this forum. There are only a few posters left so don't waste your time on here. This forum is dead and nobody cares.

Marketing - Your thoughts?

On the whole, you could wade in the  level of thought on this thread and the soles of your feet wouldn't be approaching damp.
