POV on GANT:
Da boys are all in really Fem. Looks.
Sure they've got facial hair, but those boys are all wearing girls' takes on the American Preppy look.

Ralph plays this card too (Tony has mentioned all this before on other threads). IT SELLS.

Prep is... Feminine.

T ol Bean,

I agree, and trust that these pictures do no represent the "Edge" to which you earlier referred.

These boys could stand to do a few press ups and take a shower.

Cheers,
Trip

ps. where does no. 49 stand on a rugby or polo pitch?

Re: GANT advertising & 'lifestylism'...

One of the other subtle messages is that you can wear a tie but don't have to look like a posh wanker.
No one here would wear a tie like that.
But too many youngsters would and will.
I see it often (more often).
But is that nothing new...?

The dishevelled look & askew un-tied tie is also a subtle suggestion of post-coital happiness and fatigue (hair uncombed, unshaven on the morning after, yesterday's clothes wrinkled and thrown on for the walk home). Which is why advertisers have been doing the dishevelled rent-boy look for so long, to work that subtle message. They did it in the full knowledge that only a small percentage of real men, even young men, would dress like that. Clean cut was always still the norm.

But now, after 25 years of such advertising, it's the dishevelled look that's becoming the norm. Yes, that seems like old news, but it's actually more revolutionary than it seems at first blush...if you think about it...someday I expect to apply for a job and be interviewed by a man with 2-3 days growth and a skinny suit with tie askew...and it will be normal...

But is that nothing new...?
Or have we just becomed so accustomed to the advertising that we don't notice the reality?
...that the reality is still much more conservative?

Or...has anyone actually seen someone dressed like those GANT ads? or dressed like a model in Ralph's ads?

Re: GANT advertising & 'lifestylism'...

I love the way adverts influence life.
More and more people seem to be taking their cues solely from the media.
'Reality' is what they see on the TV or in films and magazines.
Real life is increasingly rejected by most people as it doesn't live up to the adverts, it falls too far short - People wonder why everybody isn't always smiling with perfect white teeth all the time in their lives. It doesn't seem right or fair.
Internet communities are growing while real life communities are dying.
People are happier living cyber lives while their real life relationships are meaning less and less to them.

Etc.

... ... ...

The future will be whatever you are sold.

t.

PS - But do have a good Sunday, won't you.

I want to see more women wearing tweeds and black turtlenecks.
I want to marry a woman who wears tweeds and black turtlenecks.

Too much to ask for, these days.

Re: GANT advertising & 'lifestylism'...

Isn't Gant a pretty old school brand?....having died off then reborn recently with a renewed interest in preppy-dom?

Not a big fan of the mens' line (tho some of their OCBDs are fine and good) but my fiancee picked up a few sweaters that look great when we dropped into their NYC store.

What usually is the downfall of those who fall prey to the lure of any 'lifestyle' campaign is, since it's probably *not* their actual lifestyle, they wear it head to toe like an ad or shop mannequin...and come off looking as such.

If you want to talk about a renaissance from cheese to tongue in cheek adoption, I think Le Tigre shirts are a lot more preppy now.

Re: GANT advertising & 'lifestylism'...

I remember wearing Le Tigre as a kid in the early 80s...primarily because my folks didnt want to spend the extra $ for Izod Lacoste.  And they had those terrible jingles "hold that tiger"

I nearly fell over when I saw it resurface as a 'hipster' brand a few years ago.  I don't think the world needs the revitalization of LeTigre
