Re: The English Look...

Paul Smith is certainly the king of hidden details in his clothes, too much sometimes. But I do like his wallets with the 1950s Vargos style pinups on the inside.

Re: The English Look...

Formby - sure theres a range but its always unmistakably ENGLISH when it is.

Funnily, and I hate to mention this, but the UK Ivy blokes always look UK not USA*.
Despite the USA obsession.
In UK Ivy is a reaction, a protest, a declaration of difference but in the context of understanding that difference and what it differs from.

* I'm not suggesting its a bad thing.

Well, Reggie, isn't your best point that there is an arguable reason why everyone is talking about this English style; chasing it, trying to define it and replicate it; ultimately to give it a kick in the pants over here with stripey shirts and floral print ties. That works for me - except I'll leave out the brown shoes with blue suits, in-yer-face candy stripes and floral ties and stick to the kinda Mo Ali style that I favor. I'm a kinda Golden Age guy.

Re: The English Look...

I think that with most men that are into a "scene" its only a matter of time before their obsession with getting the look right takes over from what really looks good on them, often unaware that they've ended up a characterture of a by-gone period of time. They become stagnant in their chosen look. I constantly see middle aged men in slim fitting suits on the mod scene, regardless of pudding they have put on since they were young. Also lots of loud stuff like boating blazers and naff vintage stuff. Rockabillies and Skinheads look even worse. An obsession  with high rise trousers by anyone in the UK  will deem themself as quite odd to the rest of the population. Thats why everyone takes the piss out of Simon Cowells pants.  I wear clothes that suit me, taking into account my age, the age I live in, my shape and with a nod to fashion. If your not doing that I have no doubt you dress like a twat or are non dis-script in your attire.

Re: The English Look...

^Wise words from Goodyear, but I have to say, I really like wearing period gear and pulling it off. As an example, officer pinks in work for winter. But you can't over do it, because you will end up looking like a reenactment society.

Re: The English Look...

The "Its only clothes" statement suggests either; The person dresses badly or the person wishes to be seen as aloof about clothes but takes his time selecting items to wear together. Be that a good or poor look. Pure tosh either way. Anyone who says theres not been many times in his life when he's changed his tie choice more than once is a liar.

Re: The English Look...

From the looks of the vast majority of men I see day to day, they don't give a crap about clothes.
