I'm looking to pick up some cheapo under $40 beater denims at Sheplers and am a bit confused about the styles and washes available. I'm looking at the 936 Slim Fit Premium Wash and the Wrangler 936 Prewashed Denim Jeans. I assume these are the same cut from the photos and specs but does anyone have any experience with the 14.75 oz. cotton denim Indigo versus the Dark Stone wash? I normally wouldn't touch stone wash but the color looks better to me in photos than the cheap looking 88-Indigo blue which look a bit like the overweight elasticized waistband midwestern mom pants that are ubiquitously found at Walmart parking lots throughout the country:

Does anyone have any experience?
I'm in the process of having a pair of custom jeans made through Jack/Knife in SF but would like to give these cheap beaters a go while waiting for the premium pair to be finished.
Any feedback on how they wash or fade would be really appreciated. I'm leaning towards the $10 more ($39.99) number.
Would also love to get some fit info too... true to size? Can anyone grab a tape measure and let me know what a 32/33/34 waist falls at?
And lastly, how lengthy is the rise?
Much thanks for any help!!
Then there's also the "936GS George Strait Cowboy Cut® Slim Fit Jean" according to Wrangler's site... what the heck's the difference?
Last time I tried wrangler they were true to size but the cut may have changed... Any of those two will do fine IMO - why not order both and return the ones you don't like? At that price you got nothing to loose...
Also try the new 501's they changed the cut recently and to me they will always be my go to jeans -
Also, Uniqlo Japanese made jeans have become really hard to find but they are really nice - same shape as the 501's but with darker nicer indigo -
I would vote Dark Stone. The indigo looks pretty terrible to my eye.
Thanks fellas, zooming right in on the denim I actually think I'm going to go with the indigo as they look like they'd wear and fade better. I'm not sure whether to do the rigid or prewashed though. I don't think there's any difference in the fit... it doesn't appear to be shrink to size, so I may just opt for the rigid.
SenorJose, I'm not really a fan of any current American made jeans so if these work out then I'm fine with keeping the Wranglers as a beater pair. I'll have my Jack/Knife customs cut exactly to spec how I want 'em for my high quality denims and I'll be set with that!
Too bad these are $400+

My Wranglers are called MWZ13 but I think the denim is the same as the pic.
Much different colour to all my other jeans, a fruit blueberry. The denim twill is different too. Very tough, but that blue stops me from wearing them.
^
Yeah. The rigid fade to a sort of blueberry color. My plan is to just wash and wear these until they fall apart. I'll document the progress.
It would be interesting to see how the prewashed fade over time.
WW
Those look great on you and go with your style ... How would you compare them to 501's? The rise is much higher, right ?
Quite a bit higher than modern run of the mill cheap 501s for sure.
And now I recall that back in the day I did go through almost every color of the 13MWZ prewashed colored jeans (brown, stone, grey, etc.) but can't really recall how those colors stood up over time. I'm kind of itching to get some of the grey ones.
^^
Thanks WW!
Do you have them tapered? Or just wear them as they come?
Those do look great man, at least for the price!
I think the prewashed are just that... they've probably been put on spin 4 or 5 times before shipped so the dye presumably looks a bit less vibrant cobalt colored, haha. More akin to your second picture I'm sure, than the first.
I really went with these because of their high waist... we should really just call it true waist!
I think they'll be perfect for the country with flannels and pendletons, worn just as you've posted! I probably won't be wearing them around town with oxfords and weejuns though; I'll wait until the custom JKs are finished.
Thanks for sharing the great looking photos and reaffirming my decision to purchase!
PS - What waist size do you take man?
Would you mind laying them out flat and measuring the true waist and letting me know?
I'd really appreciate that!

The 936 as compared to the original cowboy cut - supposedly narrower in the seat & thigh than original fit 13MWZ Wrangler jeans.
Same straight leg cut otherwise and far from extreme as the hem opens up to 16 3/4"

Senor, these are just worn as they are, no tapering. They're definitely not weejun jeans, but they go perfect with a work boot, desert boot, or sneaker even. They're crude jeans constructed with super heavy denim and riveted construction but they're a true straight fit and they're cheap as hell. Completely disposable if they ever wear out. I think they come with a "One year warranty", whatever that entails. And I think some are also still made in the U.S. The Western store near me has a wall of these in every fit, color, and size and when I was in there I know a pair I tried on was made in U.S. The ones I'm wearing here are made in Mexico.
Oliver, as soon as I get home I'll measure for you. I got the 30 waist. I'll also measure inseam to let you know how much they've shrunk in length. Check back in about an hour 30.
WM, I think yours look great in the second pic. I'm gonna chuck mine in the wash a few times and see how the blue goes.
Thanks for all the details brother, they do look tough as nails!
And I concur, that second photo is perfect!
I'm looking forward to breaking these in when we're up in Gold Country in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas over Halloween weekend.
