Re: A Pox On Youth Subcultures !

Doesn't it rather depend on the sub-culture and the individuals interpretation of the look? A Punk looks a tosser at 15 and looks an even bigger tosser at 50. Same can be said of Skins, Teds and Rockabillies, but not rockabillie chicks. They look hot and you know they've got the kit on under their skirts, the filthy hussies, but I digress....A Modernist has much less of an uniform outlook on clothes, a well dressed person looks good at any age. If someone points you out as a mod then your not doing it right and no doubt look like a twat. Anyone who dresses in a cult way doesn't really get clothes, they want a uniform rather than good clothing. Strange that the thread was started by someone who has an affliction with wearing clothes that has to fit into a pigeon hole, even if he has zero application of doing so himself.

Aye but how cruel is fashion... will you wear in 5/10 years time what you wear today or will you move forward with menswear trends? I think we all open to influence and ignorance to the power of now when we decide what is good

Move forward, no doubt about that. Avoid extremes of course. If you seen a group of guys wearing Zoot suits would you think they look cool or like a bunch of hohos? I think that of any group of people that dress the same odd way.

Re: A Pox On Youth Subcultures !

Im not sure people look like hohos just for dressing the same.. I think many different styles of clothing can look good but it normally takes the right person to be wearing it. Im not sure taste can be distilled away from trend otherwise our own tastes would never change.. I cant believe there is one exclusive truth to clothing. There is certainly extremes sometimes they can look silly. But moderation can look dull. It is a moving target. I think what your talking about is being on point. And in your mind currently that is what is correct.  I think its up for change. Its all about the design. A good designer can create attractive things in different styles. There probably are some under lying rules but so many variations are possible. I dont see clothing as being different.

Oh and here is the only example of some people looking good in zoot suits.

Yes but, no but. I think extremes can work... its up to the designer to make it work. Same way it takes moderation not to be boring.

Ralph Lauren was once asked about enduring style vs fashion. His answer was:
“If it doesn’t look right now, it never looked right.” Something to think about when you buy that suit. Shop for eternity”

Excerpt From: Glenn O'Brien & Jean-Philippe Delhomme. “How To Be a Man.”

Yeah - ralphie looks real goofy. But just like a broken clock is right twice a day - he may be right about somethings having good form and not being too extreme. But yeah, he understands the concept but definitely cannot execute in real life his own advice.
