Re: The Style of Charles Saatchi

Not sure about THE mass market, but is now squarely targeting the new money crowd who well .. have a lot of money (& arguably no taste) .. rather than an old money crowd .. who well ... don't, as they are probably worrying about how to restore a mid 18C ceiling without some spotty painting and decorating yobos bringing it down.

I don't think there is ANY danger of sudden closure down the line, Roubi's boyfriend, Pierre Lagrange, who bought Huntsman with the change he probably found down the back of his sofa, runs one of the biggest hedge funds in the world, GLG, to give you an idea he paid himself a cool 400 million POUNDS in the crash of '08. He could let Roubi run this for a huge loss just for the fun of it .. when youve got that much cash, losing a few million a year doesn't matter, its the price of your entertainment.

Re: The Style of Charles Saatchi

I see your point, who knows what real financial exposure he has to future volatility in markets .. he may have stashed everything he's made in cash, money market funds, short term bonds & similar .. while happily trading other peoples money in his hedge fund & earning whopping fees for doing it. I know a proprietary trader who I wont call a friend as he is a total wanker who is so shit scared of losing his own money he saves everything he has in a bank account at ~0 IR .. while at work is happy to throw around the banks money haphazardly in some obscure debt market.

Re: The Style of Charles Saatchi

The article says he has '30 pairs of £290 black suede Totes loafers' .. no idea what these are but he obviously likes them. Oddly it means he would only wear each one 12 times a year.

Re: The Style of Charles Saatchi

@Sammy .. exactly, I think Roubi has realised that new money today isn't really very interested in bespoke, they want to buy into a 'lifestyle', the Loro Pianas of this world have figured this out (& made a couple of bn quicktime doing so) & know how to create & sell a lifestyle (eurotrashy international jetset), following directly in the footsteps of people like Ralphy Lifshitz who mastered it back in the 70s/80s (East coast prep/hamptons). Bespoke by its very nature doesn't push you into clothes which appear like you live a certain lifestyle, instead it does the reverse and tries to make your clothes fit the lifestyle you already have. Therefore a clever tailor wouldn't make a banker the same style of jacket lets say that he would for his pop star client, he would tone everything down, show you the old navy stalwarts and so on. The new money finance types these days are usually 'poor & hungry' finance geek types who grew up buying RTW who now want the 'best' while still wanting the 'best' to conform to the old paradigms which are familiar. The new money oligarchy and their scions are familiar with poor quality 'bespoke' in their own countries, which might partially explain why they are likely to rate the Zegna/ Pradas/D&Gs/Loro Pianas etc of the world above hand made bespoke (definitely the case in Russia, India, China).

Re: The Style of Charles Saatchi

Some people don't want the fuss of having to match up outfits so they build their wardrobe with versatility in mind.

One reason why new money may prefers expensive RTW over bespoke, is time, the time taken to make the clobber doesn't fit the jet set lifestyle.

Another is good old fashioned conspicuous consumption, the need for designer names to show wealth and 'taste'. The need for a 'badge' to show you've arrived. Nothing new there...

Re: The Style of Charles Saatchi

The weird thing about all this is that Huntsman (and its like) were founded as top-end bespoke makers, for men who knew their onions. No question. The founders sold-out (like old man Bentley), long ago, owing to financial crisis. But why has the Neuro-trash decided to shanghai it? Why not stick to Armani, Lauren and all the other tat-vendors? And what is someone like the fey new owner doing running a business that made clothes for sportsmen and adventurers?
