More proof of Patek's status as the Go-To watch for those who presume to radiate taste:

I feel Lange has now assumed the position that V&C and AP used to hold. Everybody loves Lange now!
Marc, you may be best suited to answer my question, being that you are a former watch nerd. I now wear a Seiko. I'd like to graduate to something a bit nicer and that carries a bit more cache, but I don't want to wear a Raymond Weil (aka the Bar Mitvah Special). Any recommendations? Are IWC's worth the money?
^ or just stick with the Seiko? LOL was it something I said?

I think IWC is a better watch than it gets credit for on clothing MBs. A lot better.
JLC is, to me, a really great watch. I am not sure how it is a mid-tier watch what with the quality of movements and the outrageous complications that they now do. I am a big fan and it is certainly the best value in the world of high end watches. I would place it second to Vacheron on my list of favorites.
I'd have to agree with Matt here.
The hierarchy of watches I learned ages ago was that the "five noble houses" were Patek, Breguet, Vacheron, Piaget, and Jaeger LeCoultre.
IWC, Blancpain, Lange, and Girard Perregaux were also considered basically on par among the crowd of snobs I ran with. Baume & Mercier and Omega were the choice second-tier makes. Rolex and Breitling were dismissed out of hand as vulgar.
A great deal of watch ranking seems to me largely subjective and serves no better purpose than making you feel justified in sneering at someone else's preferences.
Traditionally, JLC were seen as a "watchmaker's watch" and supplied movements to the traditional "Big Three" (PP, VC and AP). Stylistically, they were all over the place - for every Reverso and Gentilhomme, there was a Kryos.
More recently, JLC have made a big push to gain the recognition they deserve - while innovative as ever (in-house and form movements), movement finishing has improved considerably. That said, I'm not so sure about the Compressors (or the Grande Reversos, for that matter).
Let's hope pricing doesn't reflect this new approach too much...

All great input. Thanks.
What about cheaper Swiss brands like Invicta? They make some neat looking diving watches with all manner of blingy deadbolt gadgets hanging off the side for...errrm...diving or something. But they look neat. Are these decent watches?

Don't have the scratch for a Patek, so I opted for a first-time shirt at Costco today, their version of the blue oxford cloth button down collar shirt, or oxford-type cloth. Looks like a great buy at $14, which I want to wear during the summer, when I shvitz (perspire) a lot. Also picked up Gold Toe socks. I may return for the Polo khakis, although I think I'll pass on the Michael Kors shirts.
