A Rainbow in Curved Air I've got that somewhere on vinyl
My own favourite is Michael Jackson's heartbeat as processed by the Synclavier at the beginning Smooth Criminal.

/\ seal of approval!
^ That sounds pretty interesting.
Me, too.
Hard to imagine that any specialised DJ would have a reason to get deep into a completely unrelated genre, or that, say a classical musician could still be focused on his or her repertoire while getting hip to the latest grime or dubstep releases.
And could anyone imagine Miles and Coltrane listening to the Cramps or Lux and Ivy digging Kind of Blue?
^ Of course. I think all those things you say happen all the time.
hmmm, I didn't mean to say that things like that are completely impossible or most unlikely.
What I was trying to suggest was that there is as much to gain from a focused and specialised approach as there are reasons to go for an eclectic approach.
It is fine to shop around and swoop like a butterfly just as it's fine to pursue that one love.
And why not shut the door for a while and listen to nothing at all? Or just play your own instrument?
I realize that last part sounds like WMs home office blues.
For me music is one of life's great adventures, it takes the place of expensive and dangerous travel to exotic locales without any of the geographical dispacement and discomfort of jungles and the price of admission is almost free, all you need to do is keep your ears open. I have only one prejudice and criteria in music, that it be good. Everyday, every new source is potential for something life affirming, even yesterday, I came across this musician and have some CDs on the way:

There's always something more, a little further onwards.....
But in saying all that, I am strongly drawn to the mid-20th century American jazz aesthetic of bebop, modern, cool and hard bop jazz. To me that's where the richest veins in the mine are to be found.
Also read up on Wesley Robinson a San Francisco jazz promoter who went to be massively influential to the emerging 70s punk scene.

I seem to be a complete contrast with my clothes though. I specifically aim for one period and one style. But I don't feel like music and clothes express the same thing with me
