I was at the Luigi Borrelli store; apparently the USA Director of Borrelli was also there. He asked me who my shirt was by and I replied Charvet. He then said that nobody goes to Charvet anymore, it's passe.
I was rather shocked by what he said.
Denigrating competitors is a sure sign of insecurity. In Borrelli's case, insecurity is probably a good thing.
These sorts of sleazy business practices seem more and more characteristic of luxury brands now.
Charvet is far, far superior to Borrelli, based on expert opinion (Not mine).
There are those of us who consider the word 'passe' to be the ultimate compliment. saves you some money, keeps you from worrying about what salesmen have to say about how you dress.
All stylistic elements aside, some of this is probably based on changing practices in the market where sales people are only being payed comission, no hourly wage what so ever. I think more and more we will see people hustling to make any sale regardless of the best interests of the client.
