I would prefer to choose the second boot.
It has a single-piece sole, which is more genuine for a 'desert boot'.
The first boot has a multi-piece heel, after looking closely.

Horace,
Actually neither, but then again, as to the top photo, I think all Alden lasts except the Aberdeen are clunky, especially if the trousers have a narrower leg opening. Others, including yourself, will disagree. I'd prefer the following shoe, especially because a darker brown suede may avoid ruin from salt stains a bit longer than the lighter tones and because it may be more appropriate for dressier trousers such as gray flannel: http://www.crockettandjones.co.uk/mensboots-chukka.html
Regards,
Steven
I prefer the two eyelet boot. A nice relaxed look. It looks more balanced than the second.
The top one (2 eyelet chukka) I have the same, but not in suede.
The lower one. Looks much more the part of the classic Desert Boot.
I think I like Steven's C&J the best. I wonder where I could find it in San Fran or NYC?
I just ordered the Peal, for the hell of it, though I think the Alden would probably give me the best fit, because there are so many options. And I find the leather sole more comfortable than the crepe for city walking. We'll see.
I like both of Horace's, Steven's, Mr. Grayson's on the 'J.Simons shoe' thread, and I like this one too as sported by my brother:

5th down.
Chum,
can't say I care for that one, as much. Too booty for my taste.
It is rather long, lean & elegant...
... Just like my brother's feet.
Maybe it's a little over-sophisticated? Don't know.
Was this really how boots were in the 30's?

The few things I can add to this topic are that I only own one ( dark brown ) pair of Clarks dessies that I hardly ever wear anymore. If I were to buy anything like that again I'd definitely spend some more money and opt for those playboy/McQueen boots I saw earlier on mr. Simons' website, not the chunky ones he's currently stocking though mind. I saw some nice looking ones here in town by RL would you believe, but there'll be several good ones available from the well known brands I suppose. Personally I'd prefer an Italian touch which is probably why I felt attracted to the RL boots in the first place......
I could be wrong Brother Alex, but I think Brother Horace was interested in general Moddyness not just Dessies. That's why I popped your name out there.
Some do say that you do know a thing or three about the subject...
jack.
Slightly related:
The CD of Cannonball Adderley's 1958 'Somethin' Else' (Blue Note 1595) has a great Francis Wolff photo of Miles Davis wearing Desert Boots in the fold out sleeve notes.
His hair is Ivy short & he wears narrow mid-toned worsted odd trousers with a lapped seem down the side (no turn-ups), a dark merino V neck & a white unbuttoned collared shirt. His socks are dark. It's a B&W photo hence all the talk of 'mid-toned' & 'dark'.
Great shot.
Another Desert Boot fan!
Brother H already mentioned he liked the C&J pair the best and IMHO they are the closest to Mod. I keep saying it was an idea more than anything, about combining threads in a clever and mature way. The moddy-boy stuff is surely interesting, then again very stereotypical. The thing I like the best about the hard Mods ( as opposed to Stylists ) is that they more or less established a British street smart look which was later updated by the peanuts, suedeheads, some of the soulboy crowd, casuals etc. Short hair, neat, tidy casual look and all that.....
I'll start writing my 'Sportswear and its Merits' piece soonish. It'll be about all that and more......

Agreed. But if 'Moddy Boy' is your way in then it's a start at least...
'Hard Mod' is best IMVHO... Quite blokey too!
Can you be a Hard Mod Stylist? I ought to start a thread on Modculture about that...
(Ignore me from this point onwards. 5 mins till drink time!)
Cheers, A. - We'll have a beer one day.

Hard Mod Stylists wore long leather coats in interesting colours in '64.....funnily enough the makers of "Quadrophenia" would not believe the advisors who told them so ( as they had been there ! ) and wouldn't have any of it entering the actors' wardrobe so to speak, which didn't exactly help as for authenticity needless to say..... poor result in that respect...... missed chance and all that....
It's that old gap between the cliche of a style (any style) and the reality.
Reminds me a bit of...
You know.
My favourites at present are a relatively inexpensive pair I bought in Rome. Mid brown, two hole, thinner sole than Clarks, squared toe.
It's the toe that gets me.
Keep the squares guessing.
