Re: Ivy wedding?

I'm at a wedding next Friday and I'll be wearing something very similar to what Sancho posted . I don't wear suits/ jackets enough (terrible, I know) to justify owning tab or straight collared shirts so I'll be sporting a white OCBD from John Simons.

Regarding shoes, I only have the choice of either longwings or some plain toe Loakes. I'll probably decide on the morning, if it's wet, i'll go with the plain toes as they have a dainite  sole and pack my leather soled longwings for when I do my thing on the dance floor.

It's an all weekend event so will need something smart for the second night. I've got a nice grey tweed jacket that I might take but it's slightly too long so failing that, I might just go with a Shetland.

Now where's my hip flask? smile

Re: Ivy wedding?

Last wedding I went to happened to be relatively casual (sport jacket and chinos) which helped. It was up in Ipswich last fall so I went full trad, channeling Mr. Updike. Weejuns, M2s in tobacco, white Press OCBD, green tie with small foulard pattern, lemon shaggy dog sweater and a vintage Press sack blazer. Not what I'd normally wear to a wedding, but for a jacket-and-chino-casual wedding (I made that up) it worked really well.

Re: Ivy wedding?

Hey guys! I need your help.

I'm going to a wedding on the 24th of June and I need a navy suit. Problem is that I will be going to the Philippines in about four hours and will be back in two weeks. I don't know if I have some time to searching around ebay and Etsy everyday. So, IF anyone of you see a 2 pc navy suit in 40R (pants are about 32) could you mail the link to me? It would be nice! I know it may be much to ask, but if you just comes across one when surfing Ebay/Etsy.

Thanks again guys for any help!

//Danny

I'm gonna be travelling around, not a permanent stay. How long will it take?

Re: Ivy wedding?

Sanch, follow this link and click "items I love" then plug a search for "40" and you may turn up some something helpful - https://www.etsy.com/people/modpop66/favorites?ref=hdr

I kind of remember seeing a nice 3p in navy on eBay recently. Are you looking for something that's a summer weight?

Re: Ivy wedding?

SP if you are in Manilla, 'TiƱo Suits and Sarongs' can turn-around a very decent looking suit in about 3-4 days for about US$450,
it won't be fully custom on your time scale, more a tweaked existing pattern with a couple of fittings for 'tweaks' .
Not yet tried this myself but friends have while on holidays there with really good results.

Re: Ivy wedding?

Don't order the wrong shoulder size man. You won't end up with what you want. Waist is less of a big deal (within reason; give or take 1"-3") because that can usually be altered on the cheap. The Gentry suit is way hipper anyway - it looks just like my charcoal Brooks University No. 1 three-piece. I'd buy it if it were my size. The seller's accepting offers too.

Re: Ivy wedding?

It's getting more and more tempting to order it, but what throws me off is that it's 40L, but I assume taking off and inch shouldn't look that obvious. Or?

Re: Ivy wedding?

173 cm, but it doesn't matter now because I ordered the first one I linked; darted jacket and pleated trousers (just like they way I want them). I'm in a hurry so it had to be something fast. Thanks anyways Oli!

Re: Ivy wedding?

As for this business of "not outdressing the groom," I will just mention that at the last wedding I attended, I was far better dressed than the groom and his groomsmen, the father of the bride and the officiant (who happened to be her uncle). Did I feel overdressed or out of place? No, because the same could be said of many, probably most of the male guests.

Unless the wedding in question were an ultra-casual affair, I wouldn't worry about outdressing the groom. However, sometimes it is wise to know what you are getting into. I'll never forget when my wife told me that we were going to "an outdoor wedding at Lake Arrowhead." Envisioning something out amid the dirt and the rocks and the pine trees, I wore a nice pair of olive chinos, my tan linen-blend sport coat and a pair of sturdy, rubber-soled plain-toe bluchers and packed along a Panama hat in case it was sunny. As it turned out, the "outdoor wedding" was on the lawn of a posh resort hotel. Every other man was in a dark suit, and there I was, looking like a fool! (My apologies to those who may have read this story in other fora in the past.)
