Posted on Reddit, maybe relevant, a Dunham's of Maine catalog from 1979:

/\ Aldens, , lambswool v-neck in gray and camel, Scottish cashmere cable-knit sweater, corduroy trousers in the straight-leg model, Shetland tweed ties, Cole-Haan dirty bucks, wool/mohair square end knit ties, John Smedley merino pullover long-sleeved polo,
Alan Paine Shetland crewnecks imported from England but check all the sweaters and lots of the other stuff for made in Hong Kong Crown Colony label anyway
but the Aldens were legit and the Cole-Haans were still made in the US then too, good bucks
slightly under the radar stuff, the old Yankees we rented a house from junior year received Dunham's catalogs and there was a cache of them in the basement, along with a bunch of old Beans and Talbots etc. ... there were a couple of others whose names will come to me, this was preppy catalog heyday and lots of these companies were trying to operate according to that plan .....
there were a few good usable things in the catalog but there are also too many pleats and extraneous telltale details that would have marked most of the sport coats cheesy and some downright campy
my instant recollection is that the stuff appealed to field-hockey players and other gals but that's subjective I'm sure
only been cold enough for a sweater five days or fewer a year for a few years but this year is is a chillier one, relatively, and there have been some opportunities for winter clothes
I'm going with made-in-USA Patagonia pullover, USA 501 stf '80s or '90s with '00s repairs by denim specialist in LA, '13 Chuck lows in navy NYC a block from the Garden,
J. Press charcoal wool/ribbon D-ring belt '13-'14, faded red Russell Athletic pocket t-shirt USA
I got the Patagonia from Paragon brick and mortar, jeans from a classic Army-Navy store in LA, J. Press was also ordered on the phone, t-shirt was NOS from vintage/thrift in Miami, Chucks were from a physical plane sporting goods store
if it's cold tomorrow I'll reach into the box of wool (Brooks Brothers, Andover, Press, O'Connell's, Bean) but tonight it was the box of rugged (Patagonia, The North Face, Filson)
Late '70s Prep was a progression from post-'66, or Late Ivy, and '80s Fleece Prep© and '90s Grunge Prep© are likewise offshoots of the late '70s deal
fleece got in the same way 60/40 did, I always knew tons of preps who were early adapters, and that was smart business .....
Patagonia and J. Press, Levi's, and Converse, Russell t-shirt, it's all Americana at the end of the day
and when combined with sweaters and scarves from Scotland, England, and Ireland, it is a blast to wear, can't do without the Shetlands, they are as truly essential to the look as the buttondown collar, though they don't always need to be worn together
anyway that's why I dug out the wool belt from Press, wool to add a bit of gravity to the casual
/\ those t-shirts seem to have sold out so you now have a collector's item of sorts!
today for me is a navy Russell zip hoodie, black t-shirt with some orange lettering, navy USA Levi's 519s '80s formerly NOS, sailfish belt from Maine in royal/navy, dark green/white suede Adid@s, it's chilly and gray and I'm going to a rather cool place pretty soon so a layer is necessary
not polar vortex but not walk shorts, t-shirt, and flips either
the dark green sneakers are nice for this gray weather, I'm getting a lot of use out of them so that they're not those green sneakers I never wear
I did have a pair of green Puma Clydes in the early-to-mid-'70s, but they were frankly more part of '70s cartoon and funk culture than any kind of prep
those were great times though, we weren't thinking about buttondown collars, just sneakers and t-shirts, heavily, and secondarily, cords, jeans, and fatigue pants
super cool but not really touched on in the OPH, maybe because it wasn't exclusive to preppies but was worn by all sorts of kids across the spectrum, there was great style in the '70s, excessive as it may have often been
does anybody think that preppy kids didn't wear graphic tees then and now?
can't forget how much of the textbook OPH style was forced on people, students especially
^are all of these at Andover? most them are pretty successfully pulled off, which was easier then because everybody wore it. you get authentic combinations that probably nobody today would wear like the bean norwegian with the jean jacket. interestingly enough i know a tailor who is especially fond of jean jackets even though i don't think he makes them.

Amazing pictures. I feel quite self-conscious in a sports jacket but these are great encouragement (and all the more casual looks).
Berkeley, those are awesome pics btw! Your Quoddy Mocs look alot like the Timberlands I have and that were worn alot in the late 80s / early 90s here in Austria, too.
