Sorry, I respectfully disagree. I know Feat made fine albums, and in fact, Sailing Shoes is one of my favorites of theirs, but on a very real level, the debut does compare to Exile. To my ears, it sounds very late '60s early 70s Stones-ish through a weird Texas psychedelic filter.
well you might be in the minority but you are definitely entitled to opinions and more importantly to spin whatever you like
if you like it better than Exile than it is better, for you, at this moment anyway .....
but nobody else in the known or unknown universe thinks Little Feat is better on any level than Exile ......
compare the Stones' Slim Harpo and Robert Johnson covers to Feat's Wolf covers for an illustration: the Stones are transcendent and blow doors, get wild, knock themselves out, and weren't only heading for an overload, they did in fact overload ....
whereas Feat paid homage tastefully but never lost control, which is the essence of rock and why Exile will always rule in spite of its flaws, because it's so dangerously out of control and wound up tight yet sloppily loose ..... by comparison Feat sounds talented but polite, genteel, mannered .....
on Sailin' Shoes' Teenage Nervous Breakdown they kicked their ass into gear but their deal was always a measured syncopated shuffle, not a coked-up adrenal rush
but still, respect to you for even knowing about Little Feat's first record, which was neglected for a long time .....
but Rocks Off alone is worth more than all Little Feat's stuff put together and I always loved the real Little Feat with Lowell of course and in fact have some good tales involving them and I caught 'em in '78 when I was a mere 17 ......... one of the best shows I've ever seen, much better than any live Stones I personally saw
My opinions often differ from the known and unknown universe! I can't help that.
Well...I like little feat, the drumming being the favourite bit, but cant really see the comparison in an objective sense.
Anyway,
Here is SS with a wonky inside out groove....

Its to do with the space in the playing..in LF the piano and the guitar and the snares all kind of fight round a similar space and it leaves gaps and bottlenecks in the rhythmical space, well to my ear, where as the stones spread nicely ahead and behind the beat. Normally with Keith at the front Charlie at the rear. Superficially I know what you're saying about the sound of both albums but in terms of execution and that magic that a band that has a musical chemistry it just doesnt match IMO thats why I dont think it's really a sound call.
But if it pleases you what can I say?
You can say that you still love me. For starters.

/\ have to say I was thinking about this earlier tonight and now I'm not sure about the Red Wings that night at Toad's Place, maybe I was the one wearing them ...
either way someone's floppy boot stomped down into the ground ... I've still got mine ......
of course Captain Beefheart does specifically intone the words "Red Wings" in the gritty song poem The Dust Blows Forward 'N' The Dust Blows Back from Trout Mask Replica:
It’s night now and the moon looks like uh dandelion
It’s black now ‘n the blackbird’s feedin’ on rice
‘n his red wings look diamonds ‘n lice
I can hear the mice toes scamperin’
Gophers rumblin’ in pile crater rock hole
One red bean stuck in the bottom of uh tin bowl
Hot coffee from uh krimpt up can
Me ‘n my girl named Bimbo Limbo Spam
this is what happens when you're taught "close reading"
Harvey Mandel 'Baby Bater', I like HM first two albums but I think this is my fav track

Guess how heavy LPs are? Really heavy. I'm reminded of this every time I move. 12 boxes this time. Good exercise for building up the guns.
