Re: LL Bean Barn Coat

This field coat from the Territory Ahead is promoted as an upgraded version of the Bean coat, and priced accordingly.  I ended up going with the Bean coat for its authenticity...

I like this L L Bean Camp Shirt that Connie got:  I don't know if it's vintage or not, but I had one in short sleeve years ago that was great.  And one in a check pattern.  Both lasted for ever.

It's kinda/sorta Robert Redford 3 Days of the Condor thing, which had some 70's prep/Ivy League stuff.

Re: LL Bean Barn Coat

As a quick follow-up, I recently received the Bean field coat and it doesn't disappoint.  To my eye, at least, workmanship is excellent, particularly given the modest price.  Cloth is fairly soft and pliable, unlike the Filson tin fabric that I'm not fond of.  I've been wearing it with casual pants, such as jeans and corduroys, but I spotted an elegant gentleman wearing his with grey flannel trousers and suede chukkas, smartly accessorized with a cashmere scarf, which illustrates the versatility of the coat.  What's old is new again.

Much of Bean's stuff is very well constructed, for the price point. It is actually finished, unlike some of the better known "proudly made in the USA" brands. Sad but true.

Re: LL Bean Barn Coat

^ I own one. It's about 10-12 years old, quite filthy, and supremely useful — unless it's raining.

When I bought it I emptied most of a can of Scotch Guard waterproofing spray (silicone, basically) on it, and that kept the rain out for a few years.

A subsequent attempt at reapplying didn't take. So it gets wet and stays wet. Fine for a dirzzle or light snow, but I wouldn't take it on an extended backpacking trip or anything.

With a bit of digging you can find a similar coat, called Duxbak, that has some sort of super-duper waterproofing that never wears off. I don't know if they are still around.

I say go Bean & trash it. Barbour doesn't come in to it. It's a style choice. This stuff isn't supposed to last forever. It's price point tells you it's to be used and abused and left on a train one day. I grew up with these jackets. They're worth it.

Re: LL Bean Barn Coat

yep - on sale - $12 or so I think - cheaper than a used crappy shirt from the Salvos Opshop. Its not flannel but nice and soft. True colors of both are closer in the right hand cropped pic.

Re: LL Bean Barn Coat

There's a few in the closet up at the cottage, along with Patagonia, London Fog, and North Face; an old Woolrich sweater from the marina.  Lots of stuff from the local shops in town. I'd have to think the most recently purchased item is at least fifteen years old; the bags of charcoal are probably the youngest things in there.
