Great minds think alike - I had a new thread on shoes in mind for today as well. Three things inspired this thread: first, recent discussion of wedding footwear in the ILSFT thread; second, George Plimpton's brown monk straps with a navy suit on Dick Cavett; and third, some photos of JFK with various cordovan and black cap-toes.
What's your favorite (not necessarily "most correct") shoe to wear with a suit?
I have a pair of Cordovan Gunboats and a pair of Black Pebblegrain PTBs, both Florsheim Imperial. Wouldn't mind some black Captoes as well?
Black tassel loafers... 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
I'll wear loafers with a suit sometimes in the.summer but generally it has to be lace ups. I've got PTBs but when I wear them I always find myself wishing I had worn something more interesting, they're alright for funerals I suppose. At the other end of the lace up scale, Gunboats don't always seem right in formal scenarios. My favourite all rounder for suit wear is the split toe, a nice balance between smartness and interesting detail IMO.
I'm hardcore, I like penny loafers a lot with a suit ... I have all the others, captoes, longwings, plain-toes, tassel loafers, but I'll always try to see if a leisure handsewn moccasin will work, been that way for years ....
I'll second Woofs recommendation on split-toes. Also if I can get away with a boot (desert or buckle) I will often go for that.
It's gunboat diplomacy for me every time, though I like Woof's suggestion about split toes.
Ah, my apologies Chief... It was suitably appreciative, I like a tassel loafer with a suit myself...
I also like a monk strap (classic, not #menswear), or even a more refined chukka boot on occasion... And stan, I'm glad you're repping the pennys with a suit, I've done the same myself many a time... Especially black penny loafers...
I have to channel my inner Beeston and throw in for a captoe oxford in black. My individual preference is for a deep brown wingtip, but I get the most compliments on my captoes by far...
