Re: Ivy league style for today (part 2)

Thanks for the feedback Woof,
Interesting on the sizing, I've been looking at the MIUSA Oxfords which I'm guessing will be a different fit, however since retirement coincided with lock down I haven't worn anything but t-shirts and 40+ shirts stay neatly pressed in my wardrobe ! Cheers

Re: Ivy league style for today (part 2)

I'm still alive! I started an Instagram account (https://www.instagram.com/berkeley_breathes/) but that doesn't mean I'll stop posting here by any means. I've been a bit of pandemic isolation doldrums, to be honest. My hair is too long and there's no reason to wear ties! But I'm wearing my old Bunce Brothers seersucker suit tomorrow with a Makers linen tie, black belt from Maine, and Gucci loafers - pics to come. Lots of screenshots still to post too, so watch the threads...

I miss all of you, the forum is in a slow spot now it seems but I'm still here, all will be well, photos soon... smile

Re: Ivy league style for today (part 2)

No worries, we're all in the same boat, just trying to stay positive, I mean negative, negative for coronavirus

as far as clothing goes, every day I put on a clean t-shirt, a clean pair of board shorts, and a pair of basketball shorts, flips, sunglasses, baseball hat

next step of formality is a pair of sneakers

with me I've got a good pair of Adi*das leather Gazelle-like shoes called Skin Pimps, they have been excellent for me

I've also got a pair of USA Neww Balances, they were well made sneakers, and have been durable, I've had them going on seven years, I have treated them well and not worn them out, very comfortable shoes, bought them in 2014 I think, apolitically, they're good shoes for me, but I'm not sure yet about getting a new pair, we'll see,

N!ke slides

Converse All-Star low canvas, regular old Chuck Taylors in navy, I love them, they're getting on to be seven or eight as well

an old pair of Bean bluchers from good quality days, had these since '98, they're still my "new" pair, my other pair of these was bought in '79 and not retired until they disintegrated in '98 after multiple resoles with Goodyear and Cat's Paw camp soles ... it's impossible to find replacement camp soles now, by the way, unfortunately

pair of Scott Hawaii flip-flops, they've been great for me, wear them all the time, need a replacement but am resisting because I already have a couple of spares but they're all over the map so now I have to buy another pair of flip-flops

got a good selection of t-shirts and shorts, that's what I've been wearing, it's getting hot so I don't need more

got a pair of Levi's cords, pair of 501s, couple of pairs of trackies, two Makers buttondowns, one in oxford cloth and one in broadcloth

just put away my hoodie, track jacket, wool belt, heavier socks, and knit cap, I brought them with me when it was chilly in February but I don't need them now

all I've bought recently are bandanas

my board short game is pretty strong at the moment, I've devised a method for attaching my keys to shorts that don't have side pockets, which is very common with old-style boardies that were made before the advent of hybrid shorts

sunglasses have been good lately ... I brought a great pair of Ray-Ban aviators and an own-vintage pair of Hobies with me but have been sparing those the wear while I've been rotating several unusual styles that I found lying around the place ...

was given a couple of baseball caps from a Big Ten university with which I have no affiliation but I do love free stuff

the point is that this is an unreal time so I don't want to get my real clothing involved, I'd rather wear some found objects that can acquire some meaning through trial by fire than force my genteel old stuff to confront the surrealness .... I'll wear proper clothing when things are less fraught, until then I'll be in the yard wearing board shorts and sunglasses

talk about needing a haircut, I'm well into the territory of some of those hippie preps to be found throughout the excellent Yearbook Finds thread

I want to pick up a few things but then I realize that it's not time yet ..... but there are a few small items I will pick up just because I need them at the moment ....

how Ivy is this?  I mean, I've got a couple of pairs of good vintage Brooks Brothers shirts with me, a great J. Press belt, Ray-Bans, Hobie shades, Bean, and Converse, and a Fred Perry tennis racquet case I bought in 1978 at the Yale Co-Op as one of my suitcases ...... the floral boardies are definitely mid-'60s-approved

I'm definitely appreciating the stuff I already have, I always did, nowadays even little new amusing things are intensely appreciated and put into the rotation

every new season gets a fresh rotation, but some times are stranger than others, I remember what I wore in New York City in the weeks and months
immediately after 9/11, the past couple of months have reminded me a lot of that period

hang in there Beebs and everybody, don't let your guard down just yet

I have been reading a fantastic John Updike novel in which the notion of the perfect Ivy prep life comes to be seen by the tragicomic protagonist as pure illusion

which may be the case, but that has nothing to do with the fact that the '50s and '60s men's styles we still like are classics that go in and out of fashion but are assured of their place in the pantheon of mid-century design

in this respect the design-oriented approach of Tomiskinky and many others here is much more sustainable than the exclusivity angle pushed elsewhere

^ That's a classic look, Duluth! Sitting here by the water in Maine in all broadcloth and poplin, I'm sweating just looking at you... But I'm also looking forward to fall so I can haul all the fall stuff out again... That looks like a beautiful Barbour.
