Overcast and windy up here, so: Makers university stripe, Brooks navy cashmere v-neck, mostly navy Alan Paine scarf, fly-fronted Burberrys', chinos, a kind of rust-coloured Falke sock (just the one), Florsheim PTBs, Sammy Ambrose Fan Club badge.  Meat and potatoes Ivy?

Re: Ivy league style for today (part 2)

Mild and damp, with just a little rain in the air, so - unlined Brooks raincoat (now an old favourite), stone, Made In USA RL polo (pocket, no pony), sand (?), cream McGeorge cashmere (goes with more or less anything), colourful Brooks cashmere scarf, cuffed 501s, Nicholas Deakins (not unlike Padmore and Barnes or Wallabees, but a touch better).  A compliment from a weirdo (male) in the Red Cross Shop - not impressed.  A Charles Tyrwhitt overcoat on offer at £80, Paul Smith at £40, RL (made in Thailand) at £38.  Stuff they easily recognise.  Bought an old Ricard flask in the local 'antiques' centre.  Enquiries about Finnish glass proved fruitless: 'You seem to know what you're looking for, a lot of my dealers don't'.  Encouraging, huh?  A quid knocked off for the flask.  £16.  A lot of miserable masked faces in Aldi.  Indifferent service.  Not like Kaya in Nottingham, where they don't speak much English but do smile a lot.

Re: Ivy league style for today (part 2)

Off to a reunion drink with old work colleagues in Torquay. Glorious day here, riding on the train looking at a shining sea, all is well. Have donned JS chocolate brown cord suit, with blue BD Baggies chambray old enough to have a union stamp on it, tan Sebago beefroll loafers, navy blue/maroon spot Ted Baker scarf, stone colour London Fog Maincoat (lining out),RayBan Clubmasters Went to put on a stripe knit tie but looked a tad busy with the cord suit, maybe should have just gone with it. I’m really pleased with the suit  thus far, very Keydge-like unstructured jacket and slimmish cut high rise trousers, both look good worn as separates. A cord suit is smart but has a ring of informality that works in a lot of situations.

Sounds nice, Woof.  I could not carry it off.  Chocolate brown is a term I love and have just bought some Bean cords in exactly that colour.  Be interested to hear what your old work colleagues are wearing...

Ha.  There's Woof in his finery by the sea and here's me in the landlocked boondocks wearing a polo shirt and chinos with bare feet.  Looking foward maybe to a turkey sandwich and a Hershey bar from the local Jet garage.

Re: Ivy league style for today (part 2)

I can pretty much guarantee it will predominantly be standard M&S rig with the odd blazer, North Face type coats in a pile by the door. A few velcro fastening shoes for the older. I will have a large arrow with “London’  on it pointing at my head, but who cares.

The suit and outfit sounds great Woof.  Not sure I could pull off chocolate brown but one in olive would be nice.
Wonder if any of the others will notice the quality of your rig.

Re: Ivy league style for today (part 2)

I'm indulging in the (almost) Full Oscar Madison today: Shapeless (and lined) LL Bean chinos, grubby LL Bean grey sweatshirt over a thermal LL Bean undershirt, Darn Tough socks in exciting brown, crumpled wool NY Mets cap (from the old days) and the departure, LL Bean boots (insulated three eyelet version). It's cold this morning.

The Full Oscar demands grubby white sneakers.

If you haven't tried Darn Tough socks you should. Exceptionally warm and while they have some jazzy patterns designed to appeal to skiers and such, they also have nice ordinary drab brown and olive.

Otter : Take it easy, I'm pre-law.
Boon : I thought you were pre-med.
Otter : What's the difference?

Patrick, you're amazing.  Here I am in the full-on 'Vinnie and the boys will be round to play poker till three in the morning' look: polo shirt, cardigan, chinos, grubby white sneakers.

Re: Ivy league style for today (part 2)

Just ordered a pair of darn socks based on Patrick's recommendation. I've been getting increasingly fed up with socks wearing out very quickly. I only ordered the one pair just to see how I get on with them.

Robbie, I'm finding Falke disappointing nowadays so you may be right to try something new.  I've just had a glance at Patrick's recommendation myself but can also vouch for Anonymous-Ism (bought three pairs in the sale at Chiltern Street, plus a fourth full price; shared between myself and my wife).  John Smedley also do decent socks.  The older I get the more I value warm feet.

Yes, Falke socks are not what they used to be. Will check out other brands

Been considering taking the plunge on the JS cord suit Woof, did you find you needed your true size or up/down? Would be doing mail order so no luxury of trying on beforehand.

I would say true to size, jacket and trousers are roomy but not baggy. Flattering possibly!

Re: Ivy league style for today (part 2)

Or, rather, Ivy style for this evening.  A trip out for scampi and chips before getting into our dressing-gowns and Japanese socks (courtesy of those nice chaps at Chiltern Street) before settling down for Season 5 of 'The Sopranos'.  So: heavy Saks Fifth Avenue sports sweater over a yellow Campus polo shirt, chinos, socks from Murray's Toggery, Jack Purcell.  Then to Aldi for a bag of sherbert lemons.  We boondocks folk sure know how to live.  Yessiree.

Re: Ivy league style for today (part 2)

Dismal day.

Navy Geeson long-sleeve polo shirt, navy cashmere v-neck (Brooks), navy/royal blue lambswool scarf, faded USA-made 501s, Falke socks picking up the colours in the scarf.  Sand Astorlex Derby, my favourite Burberrys' fly-fronted mac.

Bought a couple of scarves and a Canali short-sleeved shirt.  Not Ivy but good enough Italian for the money.

Got the Darn Socks. Worn the socks. Love the socks. Exactly as recommended by Patrick. A bit pricey at £20 for Brits but if they last they will be worth it. I got a boring blue colour with a racy red stripe. Made in USA

A good recommendation then.  Patrick tends to know what's what.  A forum favourite of mine.
I bought Falke on Saturday at £14 a pair so £20 doesn't sound bad.  More or less the same as Anonymous-Ism.

Back in my heavy, cable-knit, Shetland SFA v-neck, a thrifted Haggar half-sleeve, chinos and Jack Purcell.  A kind of relaxed, casual, fuck me-it's November Ivy for a quick trip out.

Thanks Woofboxer, the decision has been made a bit easier for now as they are out of my size.

Light rain and wind.  A nice piece of modernist art glass has just been delivered by courier.

Navy poplin (very much secondbest) buttondown (unbuttoned), my 'old school Ivy' cardigan, newly altered Edwin, a pair of thick Anonymous-Ism, new Goodyear slippers in a dark grey that look not unlike loafers/driving shoes.  Is it 'Ivy'?  Dunno.

...and so to a jazz night, yesterday eve in ye venerable burgh of Soho:
Hardy & Johnson grey herringbone, pink Jakes OCBD, John Simons navy blue cords from some years back, John Simons striped knit tie, tan Sebago beefroll loafers. Complimented by the sax player when I went up for my signed CD and a by couple of ladies at the bar.
