I don't know about sunlight but I often see men wearing very light brown shoes with dark pants, charcoal or navy or black, and it's a mistake.

Haha. True. But you are forgetting the vital component that separates the very dark denim and the navy trousers - the turn-up.
That little fragment of a lighter colour means the dark denim works.
(For 'very dark denim' please see what they are now terming 'rigid')
