So way back in the day I owned a top coat by Graham and Gunn (which I think had a relationship to Tripler's and Hickey Freeman) with a black velvet collar. Beautiful fairly light black and white subtle herringbone pattern That one is long gone. Now I see in the Brooks off price stores they are offering a model from the real store. Not sure. TW Lewin offers what they call a chesterfield. Navy wool (cool). Does it have a velvet collar? Is it any good? Any other suggestions. I may be in the bucks these days. I feel like spending some money. But let's keep the price within the realm of sanity, which, by my definition, is under a grand.

I think in its latter years G&G were part of Hartmarx.

please let us know what you decide. I have my father's expensive English job. Decadent. I know that Press was offering them. I wonder what O'Connell's is offering? Andover's Cambridge location had a few of them. Mid-range, befitting a WASP frugality which you seem to want to eschew this time around.

no 38 these days. I think I was one my first year in college. 44 Long will do it in some sizes. Press has a nice overcoat that they haven't offered for a few years that you could stick a velvet collar on. More subtle than what Brooks is offering> maybe I should try one of the made to measure places in NYC. I don't plan to buy another for well the rest of my life, so 1000 bucks doesn't seem so bad. unless my bad habits catch up to me way sooner than I am planning.

I expect better replies. People: what do we know about Chesterfield coats. like this is not hard! who were those cigar people? They had a nice one at Sax last year. Navy with a black velvet collar and a ruby silk lining. Dunhill, that's who they were.

Dang, Tommy. You got Dunhill desires on a Press budget. What you want is a nice 50 inch long Cambridge and Black 16 oz. cashmere 3/4 inch wide 'errin' bone from Johsntons of Elgin done up in a 4 button covered fly Chesterfield with with 4 inch notched lapels and some plush velvet from some Frog firm for the collar and a 14 inch mid buttoned vent and pick stitching 1/4" from the edges of the lapels, but not collar, and chest pocket and set in flapped lower pockets and two interior chest pockets without pick stitching and a Times pocket and a tastefully unusual but not flashy lining and a relatively straight sillohuette cept for the waist. Grey cape suede hand stitched gloves with gussets twixt fingers. Black Weejuns. Homburg. Daffy's or 'untsman.

I saw that one and wondered about the weight. My old Graham and Gunn was a topcoat rather than an overcoat. A little while ago I wandered into the local Brooks Brothers factory store and low and behold and they had a lot of a model they were selling I think only in NYC a couple of years ago. 2 coats in my size. It had a list price of $900 and that day it was 25% off 25% off 25% off. At some point the price point overcame my desire for a lighter fabric. I bought it. I wore it. I've been accused of wearing a funeral coat.

I'd like to hear the trad noise. If the math was hard it was $335 bucks. A striking coat, and one that very few people wear. My only complaint was that the fabric was a winter fabric. they do offer a topcoat at Press in some stores. and tell you the price to add a velvet collar. I like the topcoat too. these decisions for those of us in I guiess the upper middle class are close calls. Value versus quality. I guess we make choices about the direction of the economy. "Hold onto your seats. We're in for a bumpy ride"
