Supposedly Nottingham's Soho. It isn't. Nottingham's population is about fifty per cent studenty, all ripped jeans and Jack Wills. Hockley is Hashtag Nation, all right-on BLM and rainbows in the road/follow us on FB and Twitter. It still has a nice feel to it, however, with the ethnic mix you might expect. And people sit drinking their coffee out of doors.
Until it hammers it down.
I think you're referring to the main street, there are all kind of backstreets and alleys you won't of visited with tiny bars, small food places, arty stuff in attics, independent cinema, computer games makers, marketing agencies, Cooperative Arts theatre, music shops, handmade jewelry, a now closed tiny 'erotic films' place etc. It combines with Lace Market area too down the hill. It's worth a mooch about (before it gets too late) into those back streets.
It has now stood in away from that main (short street) for Soho in two films recently, including 'Last Night in Soho'.
None of this Ivy of course so moving on....
Yes. I must nose around more on my next visit. Small food places I like. Alleys I like. Just like in Venice.
Actually, I was probably being unfair. Derby only has Sadler Gate. A beautiful street by day, a good place for the odd murder by night. I took a beating down there in 1978 or thereabouts. Sadler Gate is now a bit quiet shopwise, I think. Derby has few attractions and I'd quite forgotten how much I love walking around Nottingham. I used to go about once a fortnight ten to fifteen years ago, up and down Mansfield Road. Hockley. Canning Circus area. A real city. Derby is nothing of the kind.
The tailor to the Mods is up Derby Road, opposite the Catholic Cathedral (where Mum and Dad were married) and near the Danish furniture store. Not sure if he survived Covid shut down. I went in once for a particular knitted tie colour and could not escape for about about an hour. He has drawers and drawers of them, he just buys stuff because he likes it. Great for his satisfaction, if not the bank balance.
Mansfield Road wasn't what it was pre-Covid and I wouldn't hand around much there anymore.
Must have gone past there yesterday afternoon, in a taxi in the pouring rain, on the way to Radford. Wasn't Smalley's around there?
That may be the place I was thinking of (it moved from Chapel Bar when that was redeveloped). Every time I went to the Danish Homestore, I kept my head down walking past after that.
BTW - I haven't seen this, reviews were very mixed. But the adaptation of Colin Wilson's novel in one of the two films using Hockley backstreets as old Soho recently:
