I have to be in the mood. Generally worn with the tan Gloverall for a slight dash of GTH - like saddle or white bucks (which I no longer favour, being much addicted to PTBs). Now, the teaming of a long scarf and a duffle coat can get people shouting at you from car windows (which once happened, I'm not sure why, with a rather nasty pair of Haggar chinos I wore to work in 2009). A Gallic shrug is sufficient. Sardonic laughter will do. Waving your fist is not Ivy.
Ten years ago I was wearing college type scarves, now I've toned it down with more checks, plain or subtler stripes.
I like the look of college scarfs, but they always seem to be overly long and somewhat bulky. I wear Tootals more than anything with tartan or plain lambswool scarves by Johnsons of Elgin and the like as a cold weather option.
Andy, if you're trying to start a separate thread about every item of ivy I dislike, then you're doing a good job. I love scarves, but not of the college variety.
What's next, a thread on fun shirts? Very probably my least favourite item in the ivy canon.
That's not a complaint by the way - they're kosher ivy kit, even if I wouldn't wear one. On a younger ivyist they could look pretty good.
