Just hung it back up after shopping etc. Label is merely Brooks Brothers Established 1818. Yellow lettering on white background. Discreet union label tucked away in an inside pocket. No cleaning instructions. My wife and I were debating as regards the colour. Stone perhaps - but light. Unlined. Not Harry Palmer-style. I like to think of it as Cary Grant/American In Paris style. Very square-looking. Oh, not fly-fronted. The name of (presumably) the original owner is still sewn in beneath the Brooks label. Bought from an American seller on Ebay circa 2011. Inexpensive. I'd just like to know the approximate age. Thanks, chaps.
I understand that cleaning instructions became mandatory in the USA in the late 60s, so unless the tag has been removed, the lack of any would date it prior to that I suppose.
It doesn't appear to be that way. I wonder if perhaps belonged to a student who then put it away and forgot about it. To be perfectly frank, I've never been sure whether it's cotton or a blend. Having noted Gibson's dislike of dry-cleaning, I've washed it once on a 'Freshen-Up' (for about fifteen minutes) and hung it up to dry. Takes no time at all - kind of wash n'wear.
Can't help with the age but you reminded me that I have a fly fronted Brooks raincoat with a cashmere lining that can be removed. Haven't worn it for 10 years and never with the lining. Last time I wore it I felt a bit self conscious, which is not what I want to feel wearing Ivy.
Slightly off subject, I picked up purely by chance a NWT L’impermeable raincoat on eBay a few months ago, same model JS sells but in olive green for £95, not had a chance to wear it yet, until today maybe !
Chum — post a photo of label. Someone here will date.
I'm not sure that's possible at the moment and, being a Luddite technophobe, I would require assistance. But thank you for the suggestion, Horace. Always nice to hear from you.
There was a long thread on BB labels and their eras which will still be up but not use without the photos I guess.
Aye. I'd like to think some smart young Ivy chap was wearing it circa 1963-4. Love it.
