Re: Take It Or Leave It: The Bucket Hat

I'm afraid TRS is quite right.  In fact, with me the donning (nice word) of virtually any hat has wise people remove their children from my vicinity.  I've experimented with the bucket hat al la Woody, the humble watch cap, the JS seersucker, Kangol, sky blue poplin with a colourful band, the Popeye Doyle etc.  The Stetson I still own just about passes muster but gets little wear.  As for those berets of 2012...

How come Monk could wear anything?

Because he was Monk.

I think the thing with hats generally is that if you tend not to wear one, you can be a bit self conscious when you do. It’s a real change to the silhouette you’re used to seeing in the mirror.

The Harris tweed job can be either fishing/country attire or Pete Beale selling fruit and veg down the market in ‘Eastenders’.

So more familiar to people in this country and therefore less odd.

"Florid, smug, middle-aged golf club bore in this country I'd say. Propping up the 19th hole in deepest Surrey bemoaning the perils of immigration."

It's certainly not a ladykiller look, although so far one woman said it looked great and the other recoiled---not the worst of odds.

Reminds me of what men in my age bracket used to wear decades ago, or what I've recently seen sported on reruns of Barnaby Jones and Quincy.

Re: Take It Or Leave It: The Bucket Hat

I love a bucket hat, in my pre Ivy years (mod/casual I guess) I spent my first bonus on a wonderful Aquascutum reversible bucket hat which I still have a wear regularly. I also have a wax option for a some factory outlet place which is navy and perfectly slouchy.

May I throw in another option… I have a lovely vintage Brooks Bros (poplin I think) Daisy Mae with a house colour ribbon, it was a gift from her indoors and it’s really is wonderful.
