The Fundamental Things Apply: The Unfused Collar

When I stopped eyeing women in films and on TV and began studying collars instead, I realised I had a problem that no trick cyclist could explain away.  Some of, I'm sure, were disappointed by Don Draper (I'm afraid 'Mad Men' was not a series I felt required a second viewing, but it was probably accurate in its depictions of what American men were wearing rather than what UK Ivyists imagined they were wearing; agree or disagree?).
I took three of my old Brooks shirts to have their collars repaired on Saturday morning...  ulp...
Anyway, the stiff collar.  Not our look.  Not our look at all.  Reassure yourself by pinching and rubbing between finger and thumb.  Yuca, elsewhere, is laying into the Famous Names.  Any other culprits?  Geoffrey Scott we might not want to consider.  Jake's are said to be good.  Mercer are also good, yes?  Troy Guild were, as I recall.  Also Sero.  B.D. Baggie anyone?  I never had any problem with them other than considering them overpriced in the UK (but I'm going on a faulty memory).  So...

Re: The Fundamental Things Apply: The Unfused Collar

Favourite shirt was a Sero ' Purist' circ. '85, managed to get the exact same shirt (pink ocbd) from O'Connells (NOS) around 10 or so years ago, still have it but it's a bit frayed these days, Career Club were great back in the day, have a couple of NOS Troy's from O'Connells, surprisingly the collars are on the short side, BD Baggies I know aren't everyone's cup of tea (double stich on the collar),but I've had a several over the years and liked them, the majority of my current stock are Gitman Vintage, and again I know they're not everone's choice but the fit & cloth are excellent, been tempted by Mercer's but the full cut body puts me off, Gant ( yes Gant) did a 'Co-Op' range about 10 yrs ago which were good, and at £75 a good price, had a couple of JS own brand, couldn't get on with them, the fit on the early ones wasn't right, the quality of the first madras (4/5 yrs ago) wasn't good, and I can't get on with flap pockets, the new JS Ivy shirts look good, but I'd need to see them in the flesh, and those Jake's look mighty fine,

Re: The Fundamental Things Apply: The Unfused Collar

You can order a slimmer fit with Mercers, although the standard body width is pretty much identical to Makers so for me it's perfect.

I have a book called the Real Mad Men and in the photos almost every single male is wearing Brooks BDs, sack jackets etc. Whereas in all the photos of Mad Men I've seen they're wearing some dodgy contemporary (for the time it was made) crap i.e. Brooks BDs with fused collars, etc. For that reason I have no interest in watching it.

some sort of banal legitimacy

Re: The Fundamental Things Apply: The Unfused Collar

The issue I have with many is fit.  If my collar fits, my chest should be far bigger.  If my chest fits, the collar doesn't.  It's pretty typical and I hate those huge billowy shirts.  I feel a lot of shirt fits haven't updated for a long time.  It rules me out of many brands.
