Gibson Gardens again. Cord and velvet. Cord we all know about: the quintessential Ivy jacket (how I loved my old Press, until I could no longer fasten it), strides (the world is not quite your oyster, as with chinos, but you're willing to have a go), the popover (not for me, not in needlecord; soft bleeding Madras, yes please), even footwear (tan, for hot summers at the beach, sockless, why not? It's not necessarily 'mod', now, is it?). But velvet... mm... perhaps we could ask Uncle Ian to give us some tasty info on The French Look if appropriate. Staceyboy and I shook our heads somewhat a dozen or more years ago, but things move on... Was it really more hair, fatter ties, wider lapels? (Which carries onto the 'correct' or 'favoured' width for lapels). Were cravats worn? I remember them, only too well. Did 'sussed' (awful phrase) smooths adopt it when going steady?
I had a hairdresser friend, a young Jew, who looked a little like Jason King. Touches of velvet there, plus very soft loafers because he was on his feet all day. A former wearer of mohair suits to clubs. This would be circa 1973. About the right time?
