The 'Default' Trouser

I hope the good Gibson won't object to my lifting this phrase from his posting on 501s.  It set me thinking.  I must have lived in jeans, on and off, for around forty years.  Usually - not invariably - Levis.  Finally, I switched to Bean and really liked them.  Now, however, it can only be cords (an ongoing problem; I will not risk a US purchase because of the possibility of customs charges) or chinos (less of a problem).  Seersucker would not now be an option; Madras never really was; Bill's stuff was okay but only okay, nothing much; glen plaid I could not see myself wearing even in ten years time.  I used to have some nice, rather tweedy looking woollen Brooks, but they're long gone.  So: jeans, cords, chinos/khakis.  Anything else anyone is willing to recommend?

Re: The 'Default' Trouser

O'Connell's have some smarter dress trousers that are pretty decent. Press probably have too. However if you're looking for good ivy trousers in the UK then you've got a challenge. You can go to a tailor but it's also expensive and can take forever.

Re: The 'Default' Trouser

At least one of the old girls who does my alterations is away with the fairies.  Nice, but inept.  I used to have issues with the previous one: 'What d'you want to have your trousers like that for?' 'Because that's the way they're worn'.  'Well, I think it's wrong' etc. etc.  And this could be over a pair of jeans.

On subject of denim, I recently took a punt on this Chinese bootleg Buzz Rickson company.  Impressive rise on the jeans and they do a 1950s Korean war chino that once I get the legs tapered will be perfect. https://bronsonshop.com/products/non-stock-mens-15oz-unwash-heavy-red-ear-tannin-jeans

I rather think I'm going to plump (if you'll pardon the pun) for cords, in muted colours: darker shades of green, navy, maybe tan, maybe off white.

Or are you waiting for O'Connell's to open a branch in Derby?

Bean might suffice.  Frosty's mentor, the saintly Paddy Nahman, reckoned them.  He didn't like a darted jacket, either.

Re: The 'Default' Trouser

I bought some Bean cords years ago. I could live with the fact they were outsourced, but over time the medium rise proved to be intolerable and I went for some from O'Connell's. More expensive of course, but far better quality and a decent rise is guaranteed.

Like I said to you a while ago: it's worth giving up the charity shopping for a few months if the result is being able to get a pair or 2 of decent trousers. Or comb Ebay etc for some vintage, but that could take, literally, years.

Incidentally, my Bills cords are a million times better than Bean. In fact, as I recall my tailor thought the Bills were even better quality than O'Connell's. Why you were disparaging them is a mystery to me. If you see them vintage at a good price then don't hesitate. Admittedly mine are from the made in the US days - maybe more recent Bills are not so good. (I've never tried their khakis.)

Re: The 'Default' Trouser

I may end up giving Bill's another look.
Oddly, I've just opened my first Ebay account (I used my daughter's before she left home to get married) and have seen little so far that appeals.  My buying slowed to a crawl in 2010 after being slammed with all those customs charges.

O'Connell's appeal.  They most certainly do.

Re: The 'Default' Trouser

I didn't even know they did cords, so no advice to offer, but I'd be interested to know how they work out. Particularly re. quality of cloth and rise length.

Re: The 'Default' Trouser

Described as a 'silvery grey' denim, Yuca.  A stop-gap.  I browsed O'Connell's website this morning, gasped at some of the horrors I find there, tried mentally to do dollar-sterling conversions, failed miserably, then found these jeans on Ebay.

Ahem, what are we implying?  We shall see, we shall see.  Changes are being rung.

I like jeans and I like grey. However the thought of grey jeans fills me with fear.

Re: The 'Default' Trouser

I have images of U2 for some reason.

Better than listening to them I suppose. (Although to be fair I like the tune they did with BB.)

Re: The 'Default' Trouser

They were, how shall we put it, an inexpensive impulse buy - partly to test the Ebay waters now that PP seems to be on its way out.
More realistically, I have my eye on some nice Dexter loafers.

Re: The 'Default' Trouser

You would have been better off with Bean or LE cords. Average quality cloth and at best a medium rise, but combined with decent knitwear, shirt and footwear they're ok, and they are cheap.

It's with a jacket that they don't pass muster.

Re: The 'Default' Trouser

All those inexpensive buys put together would get you some decent trousers. I'll say no more as I'm hardly the best person to give financial or sartorial advice.

Re: The 'Default' Trouser

They look okay.  I don't like the labels, but the colour is okay, reminding me more of a chino than any denim I've seen.  They need altering, then I doubt very much whether they'll be worn outside the house until next spring.
