A thread for any relevant style in current popular media.
To get going, I watched Knives Out at the weekend. This is a 30s style whodunit updated very slightly. Lots of Ivy wear context, the big old house, the family all with motive for killing the author father. Not much overt Ivy style at first except a young sixteen year old family boy as political internet troll in BD, chunky cricket jumper and baggies. A riff on the prep thing.
Daniel Craig stars against type to wrongfoot the viewer and the murderous family as a southern PI in a very 1930s look wearing a wonderful herringbone wool coat. That coat was the real star of the film and highly relevant. It has been tracked down (not be me) to the Brooks Brothers Golden Fleece Chesterfield style coat still on sale.
There is more about the style at the link here where I was interested to read about Craig's 3/2 roll hopsack sportcoat which I had not noticed much of.

One of the more suspicious family members, the ungrateful douchy son had a mid century modern house with classic furniture of the type. No doubt to emphasise his lack of soulfulness, but it is tongue in cheek - everything is up for critique apart from traditional values of the PI.
Other characters had the Seven Sisters Style or modern business casual. The clothing is quite deliberate so the cops wear generic bad suits against Craig's cultured look.
Notably I realised afterwards nobody seems to change their clothes.
I'm sure that's not the case but the film sets up a look and location then romps through the twisting whodunit story.
This is a fun film, not to be taken too seriously with the easy enjoyment of Columbo or Agatha Christie.

Thanks for the link Unseen Scene, that looks like it’s worth a watch. The stills suggest that it’s nicely filmed and a good antidote to far fetched plots and improbable car chases.
Hi. Yes the updates to the formula are subtle. The clothing.is not garish, which the recoloured poster art suggests. It is a film to let wash over you and enjoy it as the traditional whodunit it is.
