It's always interesting how some of the subcultures regard fashion. There was a good point made in a NYT article about how swank characterized black and Hispanic fashions whereas "white" fashion emphasized restraint.

Certainly, we can see where restraint fell by the wayside to be replaced by slob. Swank is not something easily tossed aside.
